Help From The Experts...

Hi folks, I just received four books from Deutschland and this one has me stumped. I can usually decipher these things but am having an awful time with the old-style script. This is a softcover and with some very nice pen and ink illustrations. Could someone please tell me what book this is and who Hauptman is? Is it someone I should know about, he he? Thanks guys!

Jan,

The author Georg Wilhelm Haupt-Heydemarck is known to us for three aviation books - Double Decker C.666, Flying Section 17, and War Flying in Macedonia, detailing his World War I service. Good reads all.

The subtitle is "Einzelschriften aus dem Weltkriege" which translates roughly to "individual writings on the world war" instead of "individual writings on the world question."

What it looks like you have is a collection that includes (at least) one of Heydemarck's books, or an amalgamation or selected sections of them. Without reading it, tough to tell.

Dan... you're the man! I suspected Heydemarck but couldn't quite make that out. When I get some time later this week I'll scan and post the drawings from inside; they're charming. I haven't read any of his books yet, but imagine I'll eventually bump into affordable English copies and get the chance. Thanks for your help, it's greatly appreciated.

What you have is part 3 of a series published under the series title 'Unter den Stahlhelm : einzelschriften aus dem Weltkriege'. This serial was started in 1930 by the publisher Verlag Tradition Wilhelm Kolk. The intention was in that time to publish these works "Für den Soldaten des WK und für die Jugend (...) sind die Bücher dieser Reihe geschrieben" [translated loosely - written for the soldiers of the WW and for the youth].

Part 3 (that you have here) is the complete book of Georg Haupt-Heydemarck, as published.

The other parts of the series are not necessarily aviation related, like

Part 2 GOES, GUSTAV. Das Schicksal eines Berges im Weltkriege

Part 7 BRANDIS, CORDT von. Die Stürmer von Douaumont

etc.

Cheers

Kees
