Underside camo

As for the underside camo sticking out against the sky, keep in mind the differences of models vs. full scale. Models fly close to the observer where there is little chance for atmospheric haze and other factors to soften the view. On all but the most CAVU days, there is a substantial haze caused by smoke, moisture and other stuff in the air. I'm a full scale, instrument rated, private pilot and confront this most every flight.

The violet and azure probably gray out in the haze and from several hundered yards away (up) sort of disappear. Also, the diagonal color change is to throw off the aim of gunners.

I am a pilot too. Built and flew aircraft similar to WW-1 types.

All planes are dark silhouettes againist the sky no matter want color they are from a distance.

Hello all. from what i understand a moving object cannot be effectively camoed,
possible exception the modern "air superiority" camo, essentially monochrome). Most world war camo schemes were designed to offer some concealment when the a/c was on the ground.

I have read (no source, sorry) that the notorious "Abbeville boys" were really not from Abbeville & that yellow noses were not limited to a single ME unit (other units also used colored noses).

But in such a case it may have been considered more important to have quick ID for tactical purposes, once the planes had left the ground & upper surface camo rendered non-relevant. The lower sky/upper earth schemes actually were a liability in combat since they made plain the attitude of the a/c in a fight.
