Well, whad'ya know! I think I've just made a small but significant contribution to WW1 aviation research...Makes me feel all warm inside!

Shame we can't post those two photo's here. (because of copyright laws) I spent a good few hours yesterday looking for 'em online, but I knew it was a forlorn hope.

Dan San. I think this also strengthens your argument for saying that all Albatros DII fuselages were light coloured.

All the best.

Bucky.

My Gallery
Checking??

Southside Bucky:
I went to the photos in "RICHTHOFEN" to see what you were looking at, but primarily to see the contrast of the white band on the grey cowling. :Lo and behold, black borders. Then I understood your persistance in sticking with the black borders. When I did my color drawing of D.491/16 I had not looked at those two photos, I had used other photos as reference for the painting.
I got to give it to you Bucky, thank you for opening my eyes.
Blue Skies,
Dan-San

"Ri" on Aircraft

Hello,

Have just scanned through this thread, so may not have read it correctly.

Here goes, the Photo of RVR's D. V in which he was wounded .

Photo page 70 of Aeroplane March 2000.

Does seem to my eyes to showsome sort of lettering ahead of the right side fuselage cross. Could it be "Ri" ?

The a/c also shows what I understand to be a red nose and prop hub. The tail section also looks the same colour.

It's yet another reason why two photos of the same subject can look different - which is half the fun in this area...

After a long lapse I just noted your response! I guess this effect is what I originally termed "Optical Illusion". I wonder if our old friend Ira made any good copies while digging through the Ferko files at the University collection? I will have to ask. Seems it could be either way, I still have to opt for no outline.
