Red Baron- I thought Brown or an Australian gunner got you back in April a few years back. No red upper wing on 102/17.
Hans- Are you having fun yet? Our problem is we have not used a big enough club, I guess.
VonGrube- Why not pick out a nice MvR color scheme like 127/17 or 425/17 documented in at least 20 sources? F.I 102/17 and F.I 103/17 still have disputed color schemes on everything except the rudder and struts and the bottom of some (but not all) parts. If F.I 102/17 had any red paint (disputed), it was only the cowl and wheel covers. 152/17 was painted very similar to 127/17 until its museum time, just like RagIII stated. You do not have to read about the peeling red paint, you can see it in period photographs. I built a 1/28 Revell kit in 1959 with red paint, white fields around all crosses and rudder and an aluminum cowl. My book said that was correct. Times change.
To quote my friend Greg VanWyngarden, there are over 300 Triplanes MvR did not fly and there are beautiful color schemes on dozens of those which are perfectly documented. Send me an e-mail at
tphillips@schaferalb.com and I will send you photos of two or three from Jasta 19 which are absolutely beautiful and authentic. If you want a different red Dr.I, try Raben's Jasta 18 red and white bird which was beautiful and well documented. Only difference is he had 4 kills and MvR had a few more.
Hans- Time for another Weissen Bier.
