Be aware that Tim used a "Little" more Grey Natural linen color for his Tripe renedering! This came from a previous forum thread where we discussed "Nowarras" comments in the 1958 von Richthofen and his Flying Circus tome reference the "Grey" Courtrai Linen used on the Dr1. It was surmised that this might? lend itself to a more silver grey appearance. I think the artwork speaks for itself! The overall appearance is still CDL covered with Olive Brown streaks, but looks a lot closer to the Blue effect in B&W photos of the originals. Tim, I hope you don't mind my interjection of the origins of your finish

Jep,

No problem using my representation of how 103 may have looked. I feel that 102 was painted in the same fashion.

I do not how ever feel that 102 had red cowling and wheel covers. As mentioned by Terry, who can prove you wrong?
Myself, when I do a texture, try to analyze the facts to the best of my abilities and draw my own conclusions.

Also much of what I do would not be possible without the many experts that visit this board. Don't you just love the "Drome" ?

Rag,
No problem, you brought up the thought and it does answer a few of questions concerning some of the color descriptions. Not sure if I have mentioned this but while working on an F-4 Phantom for another project, I came across a photo with a flight of F-4's. These were Navy jets so they were finished in a typical navy grey. What was interesting was that one of the planes was banking slightly, changing its angle to the sun and camera and the result was the plane looked light blue....no joke. The trailing plane had not banked yet and still looked grey....as it should.

As soon as I saw it, I related back to this very topic. I know this is not proof....but it does demonstrate that grey can look blue.....maybe even back in September 1917

Gray

The reason modern warplanes use those gray shades today is that they pick up the color of the surrounding sky and blend in. A century of camouflage experimentation has brought us to the conclusion that a dull, medium, reflective hue works best under most conditions.

Thumbs up

Tim.
What I Will Do With My Fokker F1 102/17.I Will Make (1) extra Cowing And Set Of Wheels In The Red And The Other In The Orig Color Form. That Way I Have The Best Of Both (lol) And Not Have To Make Another Model Takes At Least 8 Weeks For Me To Get One Done Complete (If Time Permits) Now Rememember This Is Mahogany Wood And It Takes A Little Longer Then The Plastic Models Do.
This Fokker Will Be The First To Have A Inside Cockpit With Some After Market Parts. I Have Tested Building The Cockpit With Extra Mahogany And It Was Very Impressive Thank God For My Dremel Tools Or I Would Not Be Able To Do This.

Jep

As good a place as any to mention the new Over the Front with its nice big piece about 102/17 and 103/17 by Aaron Weaver and our own Terry Taz Phillips! There's a lot here to digest, a ton of much better versions of well known photos, shots new to me, stills from film, analysis etc. It's 28 pages of early triplane mania. Conclusions? Get the magazine and read on.

Achim Engels take on Fok.F.I 102/17 and f.I 103/17.

Gentlemen:
The latest issue of "World War I Aero" No.190, has an article on the Fok.F.I machines and their finish by Achim Engels. A whole NEW viewpoint. Off the wall! We are debating the the cowling and wheel covers, he has F.I 103/17 yellow to the cockpit! Oh wellllll...
Blue skies,
