hello gentlemen,i have some question for Gregvan and other specialist of this Jasta, first on a pictures in the osprey N°33(fokker DVII aces of WWI,part 2) on page 29,i'm very interest about the colors of the N°9 behind the Ltn d R Simons(who fly with the N°3) and by the other fokker behind the DVII in the foreground, this fokker have a small digit and some black marking on this elevator, possibility that aircraft come from jasta 18 with a part of this old unit marking??? that's all, sorry for my poor english,TIA for your help.Regards,Osterkamp

Hi,

Here is the photo in question:

Actually, the number on the D.VII fin seen on the extreme left is, I believe, a number 4. This photo was generously supplied from the superb collection of Jasta 43 photos held by Wouter Warmoes. According to Wouter's notes on the well-known line-up photo of D.VIIs, No. 4 was flown by Ltn d R Josef Keller. If the two photos show the same airplane, then this was the aircraft with the horizontally striped red (?) and white nose, white rear fuselage with what SEEMS to be a red (?) raven on a dark rectangle. It is certainly possible that this machine originally came from Jasta 18, and the chordwise stripes on the white tailplane/elevator were part of the unknown Jasta 18 pilot's personal markings. It also seems that the stripes were eventually painted over with white to produce an entirely white tail section, which was eventually seen on most Jasta 43 D.VIIs. This D.VII has been discussed on this forum before.

Be cautioned that this is a LOT of speculation and guessing! In other words, I'm not sure of any of this. I'm sorry that I cannot supply more information.

Osterkamp, thanks for your kind words about the book. Norman Franks and I are grateful for your words of appreciation.

Greg hello, I have two images color of two Fokker D.VII of Jasta 43:

-1) Fokker D.VII of the lt Joseph Keller j43

-2) Fokker D.VII of the lt F Jakobs j43

have can see that both Fokker not the same colors of unit thus as the jasta 43 does not have to recover as of Fokker coming from the jasta 18.

have information on this lt F Jakobs because I did not find anything on him.

thank you black baron

first thanks to Black baron and Gregvan for your quick reply, black baron, and Gregvan, for the number 9 some idea for this color marking? i know that some color marking are speculative,(we know the armcoat of a death knight in the crecy battle but we have many problem to know the exact color of a fighter from the great war, that's the game)for now,i have on my workbench the model of the Fokker flow by Ltn Wervicke(N°5) and Keller(N°4),my next one is Simons(N°3)and the N°9,possibility that's aircraft marking was red and white???here a pic from my last model[IMG][/IMG]
TIA and regards from Belgium, Osterkamp
