Fokker E.V/D.VIII Lozenge
Hi All,
In last time all try to guess how are paint the wing of the Fokkers E.V/D.VIII - it is very good question, but all forget about the LOZENGE!!!
On the photo posted some posts ago (sorry, I lost link for this thread)
5 color day pattern Lozenge is cleary seen.
5 colour lozenge is also cleary seen on the photos of the Fokkers E.V used in Polish Air Force during Polish-Soviet war.
All rudders of the PAF Fok. E.V have 5 lozenge covering rudders and fuselages are in 4 lozenge.
In my research the Fokkers E.V/D.VIII have fuselage was covered 4 colour lozenge and on some (maybe most of) rudders was covered by 5 colour lozenge canvas.
What is your opinion?
Regards
Piotr

Lozenge fabric on Fok.E.V/D.VIII??
Piotr:
Outside of the Fok.E.V made by Roger Freeman, all fok.E/V/D.VIII fuselages, tailplane, finand rudders were covered with FOUR color fabric. We have a oddity, photographs show the fuselage on Fok.E.V 149/18 was covered with four color fabric, and the fin and possibly the rudder were covered with five color fabric.???? Half the fin and all of the rudder were painted flat white.
Blue skies,

Fokker E.V/D.VIII Lozenge
Dan San:
Before I sow picture posted by Roger Freeman (sorry Roger for using your picture) I think only Polish Fokker E.V use 4 colour lozenge on the fuselage and 5 colour lozenge on the horizontal and vertical stabilizer.
Fokkers E.V with mixed Lozenge in PAF: 187/18, 188/18, 190/18 and maybe more (nor full photographic evidence)
This photo show also other planes are cowered in this manner...
I use your KEY TO LOZENGE and only 5 colour pattern match to this pattern!
Best Regards,
Piotr

Photograph oddity? Don't you mean we have an existing example.

Fok.D.VIII
Piotr:
I would like to see this picture without the lozenge overlay. Could you please reprint it. The photo of the rudder in the left rear is covered with the four color fabric. I am not as sure with the rudder in the right foreground. The D.VII fuselage is covered with four color fabric. Commencing with D.VII D.7600/18 about half were covered with five color fabric. It could very well be with the resumption of production in late October, some of the production Fok.D.VIII machines were covered with five colored fabric. The extant photos of the Fok.E.V machines, those delivered before 19 August 1918 were covered with four colored fabric.

Dan-San

Dan-San,
I have never noted a D.VIII with its fuselage covered in 5 colour fabric, there are some very good late war and post war factory photos of these aircraft and all have 4 colour fabric. It does seem strange that the D.VII used both but for now it seems there is a complete lack of evidence to suggest that any D.VIII aircraft had 5 colour fabric as its fuselage covering. For some reason it seems that smaller areas of E.V and D.VIII aircraft used this fabric (seat cover, fuselage partition behind the cockpit, longeron wrapping, rudder and fin and possibly tail-plane and elevator).

Piotr,
I forgot to mention, all stencils on the E.V/D.VIII wings are painted in white as you have noted with the works number on the aileron, under the wing on the trailing edge either side of the cut-out is the stencil Anstellwinkel 0° and between the front attachment points is the wing identification stencil (aircraft type, works number and wing number). I have just completed the stencilling to be applied to my wing.
