French Squadron Markings
I would appreciate it if someone could point me to online resources for for squadron markings. At the moment I am interested in the French fighter units, but would appreciate appreciate others.

Shredward,
Thank you for the link. It took me a couple of attempts to find anything. My French is almost nonexistent and I missed the English bottons they have on some pages. I did not have what I am looking for at the moment, but I would encourage others to take a look at this site that traces escadrilles from WWI to the present, and includes interesting photos of WWI and interwar aircraft.

Cross & Cockade USA Vol.7 #4 (1966) is all about the French especially the Escadrilles. Colour plates for their insignia as well.

Hi Steve,
If you can get your hands on a copy, "Les Escadrilles de l'aeronautique militaire francaise" will have what you are looking for. It is in French, but that hardly matters, it is readily understandable.
cheers,
shredward

French Escadrille insignia and history.
SCMc:
There is document titled, "L'AVIATION FRANCAISE
1914 - 1940, SES ESCADRILLES.SES ENSIGNES" by Commandant E. Moreau- Berillion. It is in eight folios and has every marking and variation of every Escadrille in the French Air Force complete with a short history of all the units. The markings are in hand painted water colors. When I bought mine, it costed and arm and a leg. I received the folios one at a time, so the cost was spread out. I would estimate about $1500. Believe me, it is worth it.
Blue skies,
Dan-San

Hello!
Another link :
http://perso.orange.fr/airtraditions/
click on "identification des insignes par le visuel" (on green background)
The Moreau-Berillon books are truly a collector item and as such are worth a lot of money.
For the mortals, "Les Escadrilles de l'aeronautique militaire francaise" published by the official archive and costing 77 euro (about 100$) is still very good value .
