Small bit of fabric off MvR's DrI.
Hi all.
This small bit of fabric off of MvR's DrI is on display at the RAAF Museum Point Cook, Victoria. I took this pic on the 18th Feb 2007. Thought you might like to see it. Of interest is the blue under the red....

The RAAF Museum don't record from where on the aeroplane this came from.

Ross, Srecko- Alan Toelle's and Dan-San Abbott's analysis indicates Dr.I 425/17 was originally overall CDL on top and light blue on the bottom (except the lower CDL cross fields and white upper cross fields) before being painted red. I do not believe any Dr.I, including F.I 102/17 and 103/17, was ever painted in overall light blue. I have a photo of Dr.I 588/17 (mistakenly documented as 583/17 per Alex Imrie) in a Jasta 14 line-up clearly showing returned light blue paint and 588/17 having no returned light blue paint is one of the linchpins of the overall light blue paint theory. The capture report has just been misinterpreted.

What is that other item laying flat below the fabric swatch? a piece of a strut? Interesting brush stroke (?) patterns on it.

Of course the really BIG question is; how has age and conditions effected this sample? Assuming the photo is close to the real colors I see two shades of tan (CDL or aged white? both?), possible black, light blue, gray-green, and dark rust. It looks to me as if this piece came from the edge of one of the crosses and contains a tiny portion of the sky blue underside. But, like pictures in clouds, that's just what I see.

Dark dull red???
Taz:
I don't necessarily agree with Alan Toelle about the carbon black particulates being from the engine. That would not explain the Upper wing cross field fabric piece held in the Imperial War Museum in 1972. Neither do I agree with the proposition that it was not camouflaged. The Army serial number and work numbers on the fuselage are under the red paint, NOT on top of the red paint. Fok.DR.I 425/17 was delivered as an ordinary Fok.DR.I. There is no remarks on the Fokker acceptance listing as specially finished for MVR. It would not be accepted if it was not properly and completely finished in accordance with the Builder construction and delivery mandatory regulation.
I defy any one who can come up with any information after the acceptance flight on 8 January 1918 and 19 April 1918.
To my knowledge, there is no information whatsoever when it was shipped, which Armee Flugpark it was delivered to delivered to, or when it was delivered to Jage Nr.1. All information, as far as I know, between those two dates, is hypothetical and or assumptions, guessing! Even the MvR Combat Reports offer nothing.
Say Hi to Jan.
Blue skies,
Dan
