interesting that i should find this thread, i was reading
Cecil Lewis's
Sagittarius Rising last evening and read lewis's account of that fateful final flight: my edition is the Folio , London, 1998 and on page 123 Lewis writes of seeing Ball's red-nosed Se5 flying intoa large cloudbank: i do not believe that lewis would imagine the red-nose, therefore the question becomes how much of his Se5 was painted red!
In his Air Aces of 1914-1918 Robertson ( Harleyford series) states that
LvR's Albatros had a completely yellow tail, and i would imagine the usual red nosed of Jasta 11.
Does anyone have more information on Ball's Se5?
