Manfred's paint scemes

I'm trying to do a fairly acurate paint sceme on my DR1. But every picyure i look at is a little different.I'm going with the drab and red paint job,my question is were the vertical wing struts red, drab,or natural wood?My God i've seen so many versions of his DR1 that i have to believe, either he had his plane repainted once a week,or there are many artists ad libbing what they think his plane looked like.hope you people can help me out here, thanks.

tdpatt - MvR flew several different triplanes, including 102/17, 152/17, 477/17 and 425/17. Each one had a slightly differnt paint scheme. Pick one and then we can expound on it.

Russ, td - Plus 114/17 127/17 161/17, 525/17 and I am sure I missed one.

td- Russ just did a painting of 425/17, the aircraft MvR died while flying, so he knows his Dr.Is. Everything on the aircraft was painted red except the wood on the wingtip skids and tailskid, the leather around the cockpit, the white rudder, and the black crosses with white outline.

td- The best single source for colors on MvR's Dr.Is is Richthofen by AE Ferko. Ferko's collection resides at the University of Texas, Dallas library and is huge.

"Richthofen by A E (ED) Ferko. This is a superb record of Germany’s leading fighter pilot, which also includes detailed appendices and notes. There are 203 photos (many hitherto unpublished) that trace the Baron’s WWI career. 84 pages offer a unique, fresh insight into Germany’s Ace of Aces; also included are 4 colour pages with 15 colour profiles of the Baron’s aeroplanes. £21.00"
