Degelow's Pfalz D.IIIa

Hello Forum, I am working on Eduard's Pfalz D.IIIa kit and want to do Degelows black Pfalz D.IIIa. The kit instructions show black fuse with silbergrau upper and lower wings. However, the FMP Pfalz book and Osprey's "Pfalz Scout Aces" book both show a profile with black upper and lower wings. Can anyone help? I am confused!!

Thanks,
Charles Robinson

You pay your money and make your choice...

Hi Charles,

Either interpretation is plausible, IMHO. It is really difficult to tell from the one photo of this crashed aircraft, and the surfaces of both wings are in shadow. Since Jasta 7 frequently (but not always) painted the surfaces of their aircraft wings black, and the struts and wings LOOK black to me (there even seems to be a sheen on the underside of the top wing) I went with black wings.

However, if you go with silver wings, I doubt that anybody could absolutely prove you wrong. It seems plausible to me as well. So take your pick!!

Thumbs up

Greg, Thank you so much for the quick reply. I agree, it is difficult to tell from the picture. I think I will go with the black wings.

Thanks and have a great modeling day!!

My Gallery
Does ltn.Degalow's Pfalz D.IIIa have black wings.

Rolanddvi:
I was of the original postion that the wings and struts were black. After a long discussion with Greg several years ago he convinced me they were aluminum on the lower surface and black on the upper surface, hence thw sheen.
Blue skies,
