Jasta 18 Markings

Dear all,

I was hoping somebody could help me with a question about the wing colours of Jasta 18 Fokker DVII's. According to Osprey's 'Fokker DVII Aces of WWI (Part 2)', the uppersurfaces of both wings were red, the undersurfaces covered in 4 colour lozenge. However, the Internet Modeller from October 1999 shows upper and lower surfaces as red.

Does anyone know a photograph that might confirm whether the undersurfaces of Jasta 18 Fokkers were painted red or not? The only photo I am aware of that shows the underside of a wing is the famous image of Guenther von Bueren standing by his machine (on page 86 of the Osprey book). The wings don't seem to be covered in lozenge, but the image isn't distinct enough to be sure.

Any light able to be shed on this would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Alan.

The Jasta 18 D.VII (not von Büren's) photograph on page 11 of the Windsock Datafile displays no trace of a lozenge pattern on the undersurface of the wing.

At least as to that particular aircraft, I'd think red undersurfaces would be a safe assumption.

Cheers,

Each machine rec'd the red some had it on both wing surfaces upper & lower some only had it on the upper. It depended on how much paint they had at the time.

My Gallery
Jasta 18 color history.

Aland;
Jasta 18 first received Fok.D.VII aircraft in late May 1918while based at Lomme Airfield in the German 6.Armee . On these machines it appears only the upper surface of both wings were painted vermillon, brillant red tinged orange. (We are only talking about the wings.)
On 6 June 1918 Jasta 18 was transferred to Montingen Airfield, east of Metz in the German 19. Armee. before departure, Jasta 18 returned all their fok.D.VII machines the Armee Flugpark 6. The ex-Jasta 18 D.VII were reissued to Jasta 43. The D.VII aircraft were still in the Jasta 18 colors, which the Jasta 43 pilots revised to suit their tastes.
On arrival at Montingen Airfield, Jasta 18 were issued new Fok.D.VII, mostly built by Albatros in the D.727/18 to D.926/18 range. There at Montingen Airfield they were painted in the Jasta 18 colors and now the wings were painted on both sides. These markings on their Fok.DR.I and Fok.D.VII machines remained in affect to the end of the war.
Blue skies,
Dan-San
