"Blue Max" planes

Is it my imagination, but is the lozenge camouflage on the "Blue Max" birds the same colors top and bottom?

Also, the personal insignia used by Willi -- is it a yellow shield, trimmed with white, with a black crown and letter K ? Anyone got a picture of that insignia?

It's my opinion that the Lozenge pattern used in the "THE BLUE MAX" is the same both top and bottom. Also, this pattern wasn't based on reality; but, the movie makers imagination. As far as Willi's Crest is concerned, what you descibe sounds right. I'm unable to que up the movie at this time so I can't be sure.

I have an image of Willi's Dr.I as you describe. In flight from a long distance from the $5.00 program booklet sold at the premiere. Not very clear but fits what you described.

Losenge

I recall reading that the losenge colours wer changed as the original ones did not suit the technicolour process. Similarly the D.VII were delivered with straight crosses but were changed to the more film worthy curved cross.

Anything for a good movie.

Great shots, thanks, will help out a lot in current project. The tripe that Stachel was flying had no markings at all, near as I could tell, not even a serial.

The commander's D-VII had an (Alb) serial, the only one in the squadron.

"Blue Max" had more than it's share of flaming gear struts.

(As I posted in another thread )

Classic Fighters has one of the Pfalz reproductions still flying in NZ. The CAP Photography website has a nice shot of it.

They seem to have maintained the original inacurate lozenge.

Hope this helps.
