ok time for some more photos (of models!)

Hi Taz,
Want your feedback on the following streaked wings & fuselage. The first one is the upper wing from a Fokker Funfdecker, and is just for fun but i think the streaks came out the best so far. The second are the wings for my F.1. Third & fourth are the fuselage. Do you think the streaks on the wings are too dark on the dark streaks or too light in between? i tried to make the darker streaks match your photo #27 in your OTF article but may have to tone them down a little. let me know what you think.
Thanks,
Dave

Hi,

The front of the fuse was dark but the change went from dark to light in more of a gradient rather then such a crisp line.

I think the photo of the funny wing has the best streaking. More shades of "green" though

Looks like fun.

Hi tim,
Did another thinned streaking coat between the dark lines to tone it down a little, overall appearance is a little darker than i wanted, but may have to drybrush with linen color to get the proper effect. But there is definately a sharp edge between forward fuselage and where streaked fabric begins. this is most easily seen in the photo of FI.101 without the wings. (photo 3 in OTF vol. 20 #2) It's just that in all the photos of F.103 this area is not clearly seen because it falls in the shadows of the center wing. anyway i tried to blend it in a little more but definately wanted the solid olive forward panels. When the paint drys i will take a couple of more photos.
Thanks,
Dave

I will have to disagree about the line. There is a great photo of, again 102, that shows this area well lit by sunlight and yes there is a dark line.... but it is brushed through...not so crisp. You can also see this in later models but the dark patch has moved more to the center of the fuse. I think 581 is a good example of this. I think the exposure and lighting makes these areas appear to be more crisp.

The photo (the one I think your are talking about) of Fokker and Platz with 102/17 is again a good example of bad lighting and what not. If you look closely in that photo the streaking just doesnt stop. I think the best example of 102 and 103 front end streaking is that seen on Fokker DV 692/16. To me this best matches what I see in all the photos of these two F.I. machines.

There definitely is a dark area just not as defined...imho of course.

Good luck with your model btw

OK, personally I like the linen color! Just enough room for thought on could this look blue grey from a distance. As for the streaking, I agree with Tim in that although the front was more solid than the rear, I don't think it was SOLID! More artistically, to me the streaks on the real aircraft appear smoother, more of the WET blending than Drybrushed effect. That being said, build it and paint it how YOU see it and keep on modeling! Thanks for sharing your work!!

Dave- The streaking pattern looks good. Several of us think the F.I/Dr.I used three basic colors in the streaking pattern: an olive green, a brown, and a black/gray. One way to tell if you are close to the right schemes is to take your color photos and convert them to B&W or grayscale. Compare those to the B&W photos we have.

All three F.Is did have a demarcation line between the very heavy, almost solid, olive on the front of the fuselage, and the streaking further back. This is easiest to see on the photo of the bare fuselage of F.I 101/17, where wing shadows do not spoil the view, but is visible on close examination of high resolution photos of F.I 102/103/17 as well.

Your bleached linen color looks very good.

OK I added another layer of thinned olive streaks to try & blend the heavier streaks in a little better, I think it looks better but may be too dark now. I'll try to post photos tomorrow of the latest.

Problems with my server, so I reduced the image size and am posting them the old fashion way, hope you can see them ok. let me know what you think about these final coat colors...I'm happy with them as is, unless I hear something that makes me decide to change them again!
