Red Checkerboard SE5a

Is there documentations or photos of a red and white checkerboard painted Se5a ever existing?

Cheers,
Mike

There were a couple of Se 5a types with British Home Duty units that had a lighter diamond pattern over painted on the basic PC 10 or 12 colour. The red and white pattern sounds like something an instructor's bird though I do not have the Strudivant SE 5 files to prove it. There was an American assigned SE 5a (Viper) that had a white sunray scheme so stranger things have taken place.

Hi,

The only red and white checkerboard SE5a that I know of was the gaudy one flown by American RAF Squadron Commander Rock Hudson in "Darling Lili"!

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

The whole squadron of full-scale and part-scale SE5a's in that execrable movie were painted up in the looniest of color schemes. While the flying scenes were beautifully flown and photographed, the gawd-awful paint schemes applied to the SE5a's and the miserable attempts at humor still make them very hard for me to watch without cringing. As for the rest of this terrible flick,

I have the "The SE 5 File" by Ray Sturtivant and Gordon Page, as well as other good refs by Les Rogers. Nowhere does a red and white checkered SE5a make an appearance. The night-fighting schemes referred to above are the closest anything comes.

Greg
