Fl.Abt. unit markings

In Windsock 23/5 2007 p 30 were published three beautiful photographs of LVG C.V 3368/17 with a white "star"

FA markings 1.JPG

and number "3" marking on fuselage sides and top. I remembered having seen a fourth photo in DF 71 and found it on page 4.
Now gentlemen take your magnifying glass and have look at the first machine inside the hangar. The spinner and the staggered wings identify it as a Ru C.IV and the white star marking is visible and a number which I would call 5.

Now get your Ru C.IV DF 35 p 7: a photograph of 6715/16 with the same markings and...number 4!

Has anyone an idea about the unit or knows other photographs with this marking - numbers 1, 2 and 6? Maybe on a DFW C.V?

And while you have your Rumpler DF at hand, look at the top picture on page 6. 1454/17 has a marking like this

FA markings 2.JPG

I wonder whether this might be a unit marking, as it can be found on several aircraft.

Alb C.VII - DF77 p3 (two aircraft on same photo), p11

Alb C.X - DF 114 p8

DFW C.V - DF53 p6

In C&C US 22/3 there is a drawing of a Rumpler C.IV with such a marking from Fl.Abt. 209 and photos of a Han Cl.II and a RuC.IV flown by Lt Gunther Wolff with the same marking but colours reversed.

Any comments would be very appreciated

Joachim

Fl.Abt. markings.

Flamingo:
I have the Fl.Abt. or Fl.Abt(A) unit with the tri-foil, but I am going to do some searching. The second is Fl.abt.(A)209. I had the distinct pleasure to interview Günther Wolff years ago. I have copies of his log book. If I remember Noel Shirley was with me. He took notes and I believe he may have taped the conversation. It was the basis of his article in Cross & Cockade U.S. At one time Fl.Abt.(A)209 was stationed Toulis airfield at the same field as Jasta 12 under von Tutschek.
I'll see what I can dig up on the Tri-star Fl.abt.

Hi Flamingo & Dan San

C&C Vol.14 #4 1973 has a large article about Lt Gunther Wolff of FA(A) 209.
Pages 309 & 317 have 3 photos of Han CL.III 9252/16 with the same marking (but as you said reverted colors - in the middle a small black triangle). There is also a photo of Rumpler C.VII 6477/17 that has the same marking. Since he flew these two machines with 2 different pilots maybe you are right and this is a unit marking BUT his second Hannover 9226/17 bore a different marking (like a Rhomb similar like in the banner of Würzburg - (of course i dont know the colours, just the form i mean)

Kilian:
if you will look at the other pictures listed by Flamingo, you will see that it is a unit making for Fl.Abt.(A)209.

Thanks for the confirmation Dan San. I just wondered why one of his machine had a different marking (Hannover 9226/17). Now i see i overread in the C&C that this was a personal marking.

The Han. Cl.II 9226/17 markings.

Kilian:
I most likely asked him about it the time of the interview, it has been so long ago, I would have read the Cross& Cockade article, to see if it is in there is an explanation about the markings.. I am leaving tomorrow morning to be with my Daughter Sandi, her Husband died last Friday. When I get back, I'll read the article and if it says anything about the markings on the Hannover.
Blue skiies,
Dan-San

While searching some older threads I came across

Please identify this German 2-seater

with a picture of LVG C.V 3368/17 but with it's markings removed from the sides.

In a reply Gregvan said:
If I'm not mistaken, this aircraft came from Fl. Abt. 19

I thought this might be of interest

Thank you all for your input

Joachim
