Overpainted white fields

I've seen many white fields under the cross overpainted with an dark colour.
But what about the underside? Would the white been overpainted with blue or did they retain the white field on the underside?

Hi Björn:

That's kinda open end question. It would be different from plane to plane and unit to unit.

I think your talking about the German National Insignia. It would help if you were more specific on which plane and unit. As a example the Fokker Dr.I's had the white fields on them well past the insignia change on 29 Oct 1916 to just the Eisernes Kreuz with the 50mm white border. It took most of the Dr.I to overpaint them by 17 Mar 1918 to the new Balkenkreuz. between then it was the units that decided to overpaint them to match ant unit markings.

So to answer your question, I don't think we can.

Lloyd...

Under sides of the wings.

Bjorn:
When the crossfields were over painted leaving a 50 mm wide white border around the Iron Cross. The same was done on the under side of the wings, the crossfield was overpainted with matching sky blue, leaving a 50 mm white border around the cross..

Thankyou, and a follow up question

Just some rumour control.

I once read that Fokker didn't paint the crossfields white on the underside. They were left in CDL.
Tru/untrue?

lower wing cross fields?

Orso:
That is true for the for the Fok.DR.I, and most likely true for earlier camouflaged aircraft such as the A.E.G. C.IV(Fok) and the Fok.D.V. as most likely the the camouflaged D types.
