Baracca's N17 colors

Hello,

I have a Nieuport 17 in the pipe as my next build. I want to finish it as Francesco Baracca's Nieuport 17. Can anyone give me pointers to colors and markings for that plane? The model will be 1/4 scale and I may fly fun scale with it. Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,
Dave Semararo

Hello Dave

According to the book "Italian aces of WW1" (roberto Gentilli, antiono Lozzi & paolo Varriale) A shiffer military history book (excellent!!!)

Te nieuport 17 flown by Barraca on Winter 1916/17 when he was at 70a/91a squadriglia was
The first Nieuport 17 of French production supplied to the 70a squadriglia on 21 October 1916
Barraca used it until April 1917
It was overall silver finish with the national colors below the wings(red /metal below left wing and green /metal below right wing
and on the rudder(green /white/red from front to back)
It was the first plane known to sport the famous "prancing horse" emblem, in black on both sides of the fuselage
The original french serial number appeared on the rudder (N 2614) together with the weight data, in french.

You will see a profile of the N17 here Nieuport 17

I hope this can help you

Cordialement
Bruno

Hi Dave,
One thing to note and not shown in the profile is that the cockade on the upper wing was scraped off of the aluminum dope. Have not seen a good photo of this but the profile I saw showed the white area in the aluminum color and the colored ring and center spot as a darker gray color. I'm still trying to figure out a good way to do this on a 1/48 scale kit. I may paint the wing aluminum, then apply a French decal, and try to mix a clear/aluminum mixture to overspray it. Aluminum is hard to overspray since it is so opaque it may be hard to see any of the insignia at all.

Thanks all for the information. It was mentioned that the cockade on the upper wing was removed. I dont know if I will try to duplicate that or not. I am thinking this will be my fun scale entry so all I need is a picture or a kit box cover showing the paint scheme to get my five static points. I dont know if I can use profiles from the internet. I may pick up the book on Italian aces that froggy cited. I would like to do more Italian schemes since you dont see them very often at the field.

thanks
