SPAD X111 markings?
Hi all, what an excellent forum site!
This is my first post,so here goes.
I am in the process of building a radio control model of the SPAD X111 'SMITH 1V' of Lt. Ray Brooks, and I was wondering what the tail markings 'PU 145' and PC 110' referred to.Hoping someone can help.
Cheers,
FF

PU is Poids Utile which translates as useful weight
PC is Poids Combustibles which translates as Combustibles weight.
I believe you will find that PU is the empty weight and PC is the load that can be carried, such as pilot fuel, ammunition, etc.
Both are listed as kilograms.

Hi Dale, thanks for that info mate.I've been trying to find that out for ages.Just reinforces what an ex site this is.
The more info I can find on Ray's 'bus' the better the whole build becomes.
I'm a WW1 aviation fan,so I'll definitely be coming back to this forum for any info I need on this time in history.
Again,thanks.

Are you building a kit, from plans or drawing your own plans?
I currently have the 3SeaBees SPAD XIII.
There is a great SPAD XIII build thread over on RCSCALEBUILDER.COM in the Other Designers section. TonyA from California started with BIll Effinger plans, but got ahold of the Replicraft plans and went wild with detail.
Please start a build thread on your project.
Dale

Hi Dale,
mine is from the same manufacturer as yours,(K&W models),in the Philippines, and as you know is the Ray Brooks 'Shooting Star' model. Not the Museum Quality,( I couldn't afford that),and I'd probably be too nervous to fly it anyway. I'm now at the stage of fabricating, and fixing in place, the various servo trays.I've fitted a RCV .91,(seems to be the only engine, apart from electric, that will fit under the top cowl.I even had to relieve the underside of that to get it to fit ok.I reckon the trays were set for the .75 2 stroke, and with the different height of the RCV's carby I had to change where I needed the various servos to be.
All good fun.
Have you had any experience with the RCV cd .91?

Ray Brooks shooting star??
Fearless Fly:
The "Shooting Star" was not Lt. Ray Brooks insignia, it was the insignia of the 22cd Pursuit Squadron. The insignia was designed by a friend of my Father's and a membe of the 22 cd Prsuit Squadron, Lt. Bernard "Mike" Doolin., a fine Irish boy from San Francisco. He used to tell me lurid stories of his experiences as a Pursuit pilot in France in 1918.
Blue skies,

Hi Dan-San,thanks for that info. You're sure lucky to have been able to hear stories first hand.
I know the Shooting Star was a squadron marking, and not a personal one like they used in the Escadrille de Lafayette.
The K&W models offer two SPAD versions.Ray Brooks in the 'SS' marks,or Eddie R's 'Hat in the Ring'.
Love this era of history.
Cheers,
FF
