Field painting questions.

I have a question on field painting techniques.

When the aircraft is painted in the field with squadron colors and markings, would the painters have just painted over leather exit cable reinforcements and such items, or paint around them? What about cowl attachment cables, control horns, etc? I woud think they would have just painted over most anything on that particular surface, but I have no evidence either way.

Anyone have any information of the "common practice" in this area, or was there a common prectice?

My Gallery
Field painting, how well done??

Bookmaker:
I have ponder this queston since you posted it. Well I don't think the pilots painted their machines, I believe it was left to their mechanics and or the the Jasta painter. I have seen some that were well done and others that look pretty sloppy. It is clear in some photos that instruction labels were over painted, "lift here", "trestle here", some times the erection instructions labels were over painted. So, with that in mind, I don't think the leather grommets use on to reinforce the fabric at cable entries, would have slowed them down.
And then there are the photos of Voss at Jasta B, painting his Alb.D.III.
Blue skies,
Dan-San

Dan San, I feel your analysis is probably pretty accurate. I am sure there are exceptions, but as you say, most photos indicate they weren't too concerned what they painted over, so the grommets would get painted as well.

I am getting ready to paint the stab yellow on my 1/4 scale E.V,, grommets and all.

Thanks,

Dale
