I understand photos of Kirschstein's Fok.D.VII are scarce to virtually non-existent...however there's this one...

Bonjour chrisp!

Cast an eye to 'Richthofen's Circus' Jagdgeschwader Nr 1 by Greg VanWyngarden, Volume 16 of the Aviation Elite Units series published by Osprey. You will find within a superb three view by Harry Dempsey (left side, upper, right side) of the Fokker DVII flown by Hans Kirschstein and the photograph posted by Rod. Greg offers, as always, insightful comments about what is known and what is not known about the aircraft.

Salut!
Kirk

Hi,
Thanks for the kind words, Kirk. Actually, Kirschstein flew two (possibly more) superbly striped Fokker D.VIIs - presumably the second was a BMW-engined Fokker. There are more photos than I once thought, but I'm not really at liberty to say much more.

Besides the very poor photo printed in my JG I book, one other photo of a different D.VII of Kirschstein appears on page 237 of Lance Bronnenkant's superb and astonishing new book, The Imperial German Eagles in World War I, their Postcards and Pictures, Volume 2 from Schiffer. This is a direct nose-on front view that is much sharper than the poor photo in my book. There are subtle differences that indicate that these were two separate (but very similarly-marked) aircraft. I cannot recommend Lance's book highly enough.

The amazing thing about both of K's D.VIIs is - there was hardly any component that wasn't striped! Struts, undercarriage, all surfaces of both wings - everything.

Greg

Bonjour Greg!

Interesting ... it must have been quite a bother for the fellow with the paint and the brush. Has anyone considered the complexities of meeting with the request Herr Leutnant?

I did not know that the second volume of The Imperial German Eagles In World War I Their Postcards and Pictures was available! I had the first volume of the series before me while reading the reply you made to chrisp ... a remarkable book ... the second volume has long been anticipated.

Salut!
Kirk
