"Black Tulip" Captured PUP.... Mystery To Me!

Does anyone know anything about this Sopwith Pup?

"Black Tulip" Captured PUP.

I was just looking at all of the great fotografs on the Otto Kissenberth "Captured Camel" thread and went searching for another one to add to the mix, but discovered this is a different bird!

As always, all comments are welcome.

Thanks, Jay

'Black Tulip' was N6172, the mount of Flt Cdr Robin G Mack of C Flight, Naval 3. Mack was hit in the leg during a fight on 12 April 1917, landed his Pup undamaged, but had to have his foot amputated at a German hospital.
Cheers,
shredward

Thanks Shredward.
Was "Black Tulip" like Black Prince or Black Mariah?
I guess that I need to study up on Naval 3.

That starts the completion of this puzzle.

Thanks again, Jay

Hi Jay,
'C Flight' Naval Three was the first 'Black Flight'. The other members were:
FSL Edmund Pierce, N6171 marked P - "Black Arrow"
FSL 'Tich' Rochford, N6207 marked R - "Black Bess"
FSL 'Art' Whealy, N6194 marked W (?) - "Black Prince"
FSL ' Ray Collishaw, N6160 marked C - "Black Maria"
FSL 'Army' Armstrong, N6178 marked A (?)
Cheers,
shredward

Bonjour Jay

Just to complete what Shredward said, Mack was forced to land by Leutnant Paul Von Osterroth Staffelfuhrer of jasta 12-The sop was presumably flown
by Paul von Osterroht- Paul von Osterroht - The Aerodrome - Aces and Aircraft of World War I
He was killed on 23 April 1917 ,colliding with another (when flying an albatros DIII)during a combat with PUP N6160 of Harold Kerby

Hi,

Looks like everybody's covered this one pretty well. Here's a view without the Kopierschutz. This photo was widely circulated - I think this Pup might have wound up at Valenciennes along with many other captured a/c.

Hi all.
In the second pic posted by Greg the top wing undersurface looks extremly dark from tip to tip.If I had'nt seen the first one I could easily be fooled that its overpainted.Once again you can never absolute with that trcky black & white.
Cheers to all
Cruz.
