What Unit(s) used a SWASTIKA as an insignia?
was there a particular GERMAN WWI Flying unit that used a swastika as a fuselage insignia?
Kind regards
Rick

This would not have been a unit insignia but a personal insignia. One of J11's Dr.I's had one and I have seen some on other planes but I don't know which Jasta.

Many thanks for the replies. In this instance, it would definitely have to be a unit marking of some kind as I have photos showing multiple planes bearing the same insignia. So, Jasta 23 appears to be the likely choice?
Kind regards
Rick

Lloyd, we are all only students in this wide field ...
Rick, I am only aware of this specific unit mentioned by Mosen but I am not knowing all unit markings of all German Jasta in all periods of time.
If your airplanes look like 1917-Albatros then I think we have the right unit but if you see Fokker D.VII (1918) ...hm ... then we have a problem ...

Yes, Jagdstaffel 23 used a unit marking of a black swastika on the fuselages of its Albatros D.II aircraft - before it became a Bavarian unit. According to Alex Imrie, "This was one of the earliest examples of a Jagdstaffel unit marking, and was attributed to the fact that the Staffelführer (Hauptmann Backhaus) had previously served in a Kampfgeschwader."
There was at least one Kampfgeschwader that used a swastika as a unit marking, and if I looked hard enough I could find more than one Flieger-Abteilung that also used a swastika. For example, Flieger-Abteilung (A) 208 used a white swastika on the fuselages of many of the unit's two-seaters. It was a very popular marking, in various forms.

A white swastika was also used by one of the Flieger-Abteilungen or Feldflieger-Abteilungen on their Rumpler C.IV-VII, AEG J.I, and even a captured Breguet XIV in their unit. I don't have the details with me right now, but was just looking at the photos of the unit last night.

Cigogne,
That was Fl. Abt. (A) 208 you're describing. There are photos in UTD of their Hannover, LVG C.V,AEG J.I 220/17, Rumpler C.IV and a DFW C.V - all of which bore a white swastika. Oddly, some of the aircraft were marked with a different unit marking, a vertical black/white band - the Breguet 14 was one of those.

Upper wing on Fl.Abt.A 208.
Gentlemen:
At least on the DFW.C.V of Fl.Abt.A 208, the upper surface of the upper wing was painted white.
Blue skies,
Dan-San
