They did not get into combat until the last 8 days of the war and some of the other Salmson Squadrons have outstanding combat records, which have been the focus of articles. I have been unable to find anything in back issues of Cross and Cockade or Over the Front that will shed light on their history. As a matter of fact some sources claim the 258TH never saw combat at all. Page 44 of "Salmson Aircraft of WWI" gives an anecdote of a combat incident involving a Salmson of the 258TH.

From what I've just read, the 258th was in a quite sector were a unofficial truce was in force, but there were at least two flights that the aurthor was on, one in which he dropped some small "bombs", and got a chewing out for doing so, plus another were his aircraft almost got involved with some "yellow nosed Fokkers". It looks like there may have been some unoffical flights, but, it seems the squadron as a whole were fairly inactive.
The author was an observer in the 258th.
I have posted the remainder of the 258ths aircraft pics that were in the article. "JOHN A. LOGAN-BACKSEAT VOLUNTEER" by N.C.Shirley, Cross & Cockade Journal Vol.24 #3 Autumn 1983.
