errr red baron red................

hi all,

ok i have to build a Richthofen DR.1(its one of those things you have to do)but most of the models i've seen are bright red.

i remember seeing a patch of his plane in the imperial war museam here in london and(allowing for age) it seemed alot darker.

i will probably use misterkit paints and was wondering if their
GC15 GERMAN JASTA 11 RED was the closest shade around.

many thanks

paul

I think it really depends on the age, when he painted it red it was most likely bright, and when he got shot down it would have been pretty dark. It's up to you if you want to make it look battle damaged.

I think Stephen Lawson would have a cross reference for you on that for the model paint.

Here are the colors from the existing fabric samples:
RED
Methuen 10F8 (Dan-San)
Methuen 4F4/5 (Paul Leaman)
Methuen 9/10 C8 and 9/10 E8 (Alan D. Toelle)
Methuen 9 (C-D) 8(Batter, Wally)

BLUE

Methuen 22 B 3.5 (Alan D. Toelle)

ludwig 113 (Paul) great idea...mix up a color that looks good to YOU. NOBODY really knows the exact color no matter what they say. If it looks good to you... thats all that matters. Its your model...your collection.

My Gallery
Not red.

Lloyd:
The Paul Leaman reference 4F4/5 is not a red but the olive brown darkest color used in the streaking camouflage. In an interview with one of the attendees to the MvR funeral who visited the crashed DR.I 425/17, defined the color as a maroon which is a dark red, tinged blue.
Blue skies,

Hi ludwig113:

Here is a list of the fabric that IWM has, Photos would be welcomed but please hold of on no.4 as this is a new piece that has been recently rediscovered from being missing for 10-20 years. Some friends of mine have been examining this and are in the middle of their investigation so if you could not post any pictures of this piece (no.4) until they publish that's if you can even get to see this one. Alan Toelle is currently working on paint chips from this piece and awaiting his analysis report.

Thanks so kindly....

i remember in an report from 1918 that bright red colour was nearly impossible to get at this time in case of the near end of the great war, so that some pilots, also MvR are mixing bright red with black and blue, to get the colour darker.
