Nieuport 17 N1428 brown and green camo colors???

I am working on a 1/32 Nieuport 17 N1428 from Escadrille N3 and I was wondering what exact color to paint the brown and green camo. Also I need to know the underside color of the wings, is it silver or clear dope linen? Thanks for any help

Hard to tell for sure, we have been debating this issue recently in the Nieuport 16 thread. It is known for sure that some aircraft had 4 different colors, light & dark green & light & dark brown, while others may have been 2 colors or any combination of the above. I don't think any of the camouflaged Nieuports had the aluminum underneath they would be either linen or sky blue. And don't forget the horizon blue tapes around the wings and tail surfaces. Although some aircraft had replacement wings that were camouflaged on aluminum fuselages such as one of Guynemer's N.17's so there are no hard and fast rules, you must find a photo of the aircraft you are doing and make an educated guess. Good sources for paint would be the Misterkit line, they have at least 2 of the Nieuport green & browns, not sure about the other 2 colors.

Stephen's Thread reference is edifying. Seriously he has his thumb on any Enamel Color Formula you need for matcing WWI Colors from hobby paints.

If your not adverse to Acrylic there's MisterKit WWI Colors Of COurse ? After discussion with one of their orginal creators back from 1987 here what they intended to be used for the 2-3 tone camo scheme

with FR12 Light Green for the secound Green if you need it.

Side note I think this early Nieuport Scheme must have been of some consequnce to the Germans whom first must have copied it and then decided it was better for enemy recognition to switch to a green / mauve ?

French Nieuport two-tone camo:
FR09 – Light Grey Green

FR08 – Medium Brown

Undersides:
FR07 – Light Blue

French Nieuports not camouflaged:
FR01 – Aluminium (overall)

FR04 – Clear Doped Linen is good also for other French a/cs, like Morane-Saulniers, Farmans etc. etc. on overall surfaces.

NATIONAL MARKINGS:
FR02 – French Roundel Blue

FR06 – French Roundel Red

Hi Stephen,
In your research did you find which serial # would be light blue vs. clear doped linen undersides? Also were early N.17's that were camouflaged light blue undersides?
Thanks,
Dave

Bonjour

here :L'escadrille SPA 3
you will find some Nieuport 17 which was flown at escadrille N 3 in 1916
I think that the N1428 was the one in which Brocard sits

Specifics are difficult Dave, as you know. Several batches of Nieu. 11, 16 and early 17 were on the Nieuport factory floor at the same time. (The early types were there to finish earlier contracts.) Going with most of Alan Toelle's recommendations I came up with a good enamel mix for the horizon blue. The horizon blue was confined to the ribtapes only. While there is plenty of evidence for aluminum on the undersurfaces of the Nieu 17 we are almost sure that it was never on any of the Nieu. 16 types. Those all appear to be ecru not CDL. The light blue Nieu. 11 & 16 types give us the best indication that mid production the camouflage may have been applied over these and the undersides left lt. blue. BUT that is only an assumption. We are chasing the evidence to see where it goes. For others here google the "Nieuport Pages" and check out the serial number allocations.
