Questions on Armand de Turenne's N11
Hello Everyone,
I have a question or two on the Nieuport 11 of French ace S/Lt Armand de Turenne of Escadrille N.48, (circa 1916). I am painting this plane for Red Baron 3D and while I have found side elevations for this aircraft that show the colors and markings there seems to be some variation on the finish for the tops of the wings and elevator. I currently have it done in CDL but I have seen several models that have it in white. Also, I have run across the "Hunter's Horn" facing both to the front and to the rear of the plane, though I am quite sure that rearward is correct. Here is what I have at this point, (forgive the quality of the screen capture, my HyperSnap is kinda' old school):
Any help or direction on this would be much appreciated. Thanks All.
Lou

I believe an in flight photo from above does exist, I believe it can be found in one of the "L'Album du Fanatique L'Aaviation" magazines.
If I run across anything else I will update this post

Bonjour Lou
Here is the real photo of Armand de Turenne into his Nieuport 11
As you can say I think that the stabilizer was Red ,and front part of thr fuse light blue(idem as french blue on the rudder)
I think that the center part of fuse was overpaint in white
the shield into the horn was red/gold which was official colour of De Turenne 's familly -the others part of the aircraft was in factory finish

Sorry but I took a quick look and the photo and article were about Jean Navarre...from a 1981 issue. I guess I got my striped N11's mixed.
Sorry

Thank you Bruno, your info and pictures are very helpful Sir. I will re-do the elevator in red, (now I wonder if it was red on top only or top and bottom both). Also, very nice paint on your plane.
And thanks as well to you Flypaper for trying to give me a hand with this. You are right, Jean's Nieup is very similar to Armand's Sir.

I have made the changes to my paint files and have loaded up a new picture of the end result. I went with red on the top of the elevator only and left the CDL finish on the underside. I also moved the blue-to-white break line on the fuselage ahead a bit to match the photo posted by Bruno, and lightened the blue up to more closely match the French Blue. Thanks again for the info, it was a great help.

Hi Bruno,
Thanks for posting another great picture. I used it to make this
I welcome anyones constructive criticism. I could not see the stripes, so I do not know if the number, position or direction are correct.
It seems large, but I use insignias like this for Red Baron paints. I copy the area of the skin where I want the insignia, enlarge it, paste the insignia, then reduce it to the original size and paste it onto the skin. They usually require a little touch up, but the results make it look like a high resolution skin.
Steve

Bonjour à tous
Yes Steve your shield is correct
Here is the shield of Vicomte Raymond de Turenne in 1209 and 1212
As you see Armand De Turenne was from a very ancient nobility!!
image taken from this site where you 'ill see a short history of vicomte Raymond de Turenne
Crusaders against the people of the Languedoc in the Albigensian Crusade
Lou: You should re-paint you wheels in CDL colours like on the original photo.Your skin for you red baron N11 is beautiful and realistic and I know its not easy at all with the poor 256 bipmap we have in red baron!
Cordialement
Bruno
