Kudos

Tim:

Fantastic piece of artwork!

I think you have really hit the nail on the head. With the upper surfaces looking grayish and the lower surface being blue, I think it would be difficult to differentiate where one color ends and the other begins in the heat of combat. Add to that motion and light reflectance of the surfaces and you have an overall blueish appearance.

It works for me!

You can also see how the earth-gray color descriptions came about.

As for the kite face, he did not say he did not remeber it, only that he didnt do anymore painting on the airframe, which does not rule out someone else painting the kite face, perhaps Voss himself.

I would like to warn you about your thoughts on first hand accounts...Its been over 45 years since I worked on the T-28's at HQMCFS Wash DC and I can still tell you what color they were and werent....

S'cool, its kind of like beating the dead horse some more Perhaps Voss did paint the face...thats not what I was getting at, rather that, some items don't always get recalled as we get older. One thing about the face....I think it was touched up on occasion.....no proof other than the crisp clean look durning the course of 103's service, especially when compared to the other markings.

How long did you work on the T-28s?

Out of the many planes serviced by Mr.Timm, he only had a month to work on 103...and it seems...what he remembers most vividly is...scraping all the crap of the plane ...the "earth" and oil I think is what he said...but I think when he says "earth" I think he means browns and greens...and after being so dirty from being in service....earth-grey would fit.

I dont discount these accounts, I love'em. I enjoy very much attending some of the lectures at my local flight museum. Prolly my favorite was when, a B-17 pilot was speaking, I love the heavies....3 planes won WWII...the HellCat, the Mustang and the B-17. Hands down.....imho but any how at end of his presentation, he passed around a piece of FLAK that literally landed in his lap.. It burnt his suit or what ever. I got to touch it..it was neat. But Im sure that his flak story became a little more embellished over the years.. Which is fine. Lol, and some are complete blowhards...I love it.

So, yeah I don't take these accounts as myths.....like I said..just parts of the total history.

Thanks everyone for enjoying "my" take on what 103 may have looked like in color

Hi Tim:

Are you completed with the 103/17 model? If not what do you have planed? Also, do you have plans on doing full renders with the background and or other plane?

Also, could you enlighten us here on your Dogfight experience on the WW1 show you worked on. Also as a followup have this open up any doors for you on and other projects?

Lloyd...

Lloyd...DAMN IT!!! You were so right, I've begun digging my books out again..

As for 103 it's done. No more renders of the plane. Just the scene render and the profile. Since posting the images here, I have wanted to add and touch up a few things in PhotoShop. I missed some of the linen repairs on the fuse and the like. Small things.

Now if your talking my DR.I model, then yeah, lots more too come. I have made it my "project" plane. I will continue to tweak and add to it as I find more info in the DR.I. The last big thing is finish is the cockpit...it will be cool. Oh, and I will be doing LvR's next...it will be WAY cool..well I hope, I'm gonna try a different approach with his plane.

In the end, I want to put out a profile/image type book on the FI and DR.I. With a profile and render for each plane I work on. I don't write much...so it will prolly be just a picture and caption type book. Lol, I color mo better then I writes. One day....I might even make prints available.. Lots to do.

The only other WWI plane I might do is the DH-2. I have a 1/2 completed model....and I already have a DIII model...could make for some fun renders. More currently I am working on low poly game models and a P40D. The KittyHawk is looking really good, Im mildly excited about it.

About my part on "The First Dogfighters"....
Well it's not all glamour...let me tell you. Lot's of late nights and coffee drinking. My role was pretty straight forward. I received a show outline to review and offer opinion on. It was pretty good but there were a few errors but mostly easy stuff to pick out.

From the outline, I made a profile pack of all the planes and markings for all 3 segments and sent it back for my contact(Radical 3D) for review. There was a lot to do, in a short amount of time so the task were shared amongst a group of artist. I did the F.I., se5's , Abl. DIII , maps and shaders. Also they recycled my SPAD 13 model for the last segment. I had wanted to do the Spad 7 from 1st segment but no luck. Thats about it, I provided some feed back to the animators as to the flight characteristics of the F.I....like the controlled flat spin and such. COOL BEANS!

Dont forget, others from this forum...like Barrett that also worked on the series.

Hmmm, did it open any doors? Uhmm, yes and no. No huge gigs but a great thing to have in my portfolio and it gets my name out there. Not to shabby for a amateur artist/historian tattoo'd guitar guy

From a semi-artist/non-tatooed guitar guy, I'd say not too shaby either! One thing your work has is enthusiasm- it shows in your work. I like it!

Why doesn't somebody have a German lip-reader decipher what Fokker and Voss are chatting about? Maybe Fokker sez: "hey, Werner, nice cowl ornament; why'd you paint that cowl yellow?"

Seriously.
