RFC Rudder Stripes

Hi;

I've noticed an outlining on some SE5a (and Camel) rudders. I'm guessing it's a PC10 'margin' similar to that under the wings, but done at squadron level. Or maybe where the red, white and blue dope has worn off, though I find that hard to believe. Anyone know more? (I've never seen it replicated in artist's profiles).
Cheers Tony

My Gallery
That way from the factory.

Hi Tony:
The stripes were only of the flat surface, the stripes did not continue on to the curved edge. That was the way it was when they left the factories. I don't think itwas only on the S.E.5a and the Sopwith Camel, I am not sure, it may have been on all british aircraft.
Blue skies,
Dan-San

Factory finish not Squadron level

Hi Dan San,
Thanks for your prompt answer to my question. Checking the serial numbers of the photos I posted to the production batches in The SE5 file I notice they're all from the Vicker's factory.
Machines from the Royal Aircaft Factory have stripes the full length of the rudder.

As does this one straight off the Austin factory production line.

Strange it's never picked up by profile artists and decal manufacturers.

Putting it into practice

I've trimmed the decal to get that PC10 border but of course this makes the white stripe slightly broader than the others, not too noticable. If I was a real modeller I'd mask and spray my own rudder stripes.
