No, this is not my work (wish it was).

These are Achim's planes. I was just curious what everyone thought of the wing color. There was a great thread that determined the E.V wing was stained, later findings that it was stained with a streaked effect.

Here Achim did a solid color stain, so a new thought on the E.V wing color which may lead to a good dicussion here.

Currently I am looking at building a helicopter, .....

anyone have plans for a 1918 type?

LOL.

Hi Dan, thought you would love this. Achim did not finish the plywood on the bottom as of yet. He did post a close up picture of the stained wood.

Dan, what is your thoughts on the streak effect that was discussed on the last thread and that a few model D.VIII's have? By that I mean, applying the stain in a streak effect with bare wood (unstained) showing through.

DSA, Looking forward to reading your article in WW-1 Areo when out.

Thumbs up

... as in the old photos, its the same wing as in the first post. See the streak effect from how the wood takes the stain differently. No intensional streaking was done during application, it just comes out this way.

Fokker E.V wing colours

Hi WF2,

Thank you very much for posting the photos! I have seen some original close up photos of Fokker E.V wing streaking, and they suggest it was streaky rather than patchy, but the photos you have posted show the effect quite well. It is interesting that the stain was not intentionally applied in a streaky manner but that it still looks streaky. It looks absolutely fantastic!

Thanks,

David.

Gloss varnish??

Hi womenfly2:
Perzina Pianoforte did not use a gloss varnish, Idflieg in B.L.V. (Construction ane Delivery Instructions) specifiy a matt finish varnish on plywood surfaces. Reason, shiny surfaces reflect sunlight. The gloss finish diminishes the streaking effect. Your photo with the wing in the vertical rack the steaking is visible and looks very good. With the wing mounted the gloss finish diminishes the streaking effect. Regardless it looks great.
Blue Skies,
Dan-San

Matt varnish

Hi Dan San,

I have seen you mention matt finish varnish on several occasions, and in the past I have asked you a question about matt finish varnishes which I would like to ask you again. Every German and allied varnish and dope sample I have seen, especially when it has been protected has been gloss or at the very least semi gloss. I have been told that this is because matting agents had not been invented at this time. The matt finish visible in some photographs seems to be due to the fact that all WW1 aeroplane varnishes and dopes were applied sparingly, so the gloss often soaks into the grain of the timber or the fabric, and that because they were of relatively poor quality, they tended to become dull relatively quickly.

I will look forward to your comments. Thanks,

David.

Matt finish was used.

'14-'18;
Matt finish was used, in lacquer were in used and it was made Cohn, Berlin-Neukolln. It was specified for finishing coat on printed fabric and plywood fuselages that had be stained or painted as a top coat.
Blue skies David,
Dan-San
