Barker's Camel in flight photo questions
Hello everybody,
I did a Google images search by typing in "barker camel" and I saw an in flight photo of Barker's Camel that states it was taken over Villaverla aerodrome, Italy in July, 1918. It looks to have the dark nose but also has the cut away upper wing. Has anyone seen a clearer copy of this photo? I always thought that the wing was cut away when the cowling was replaced/stripped, interesting.
Erik

This picture is credited as IWM Negative number Q 27239. Sure you can get a better copy via the Imperial War Museum London.

Hi Erik,
'Sopwith Camel-King Of Combat' by Chaz Bowyer (late and missed--he gave me lot's of info. when I was building my 1/3rd. Camel) has loads of Photos. of B6313--I certainly disagree that the 'in flight' show's the later enlarged wing 'window'.
The cowling went through three stages---original 'engine turned' as on all Sopwith built machines (1'c'--28's white square) then painted cowling and side shields (Fuslage first with 139's double hoops--then with four white-Three black)--then stripped ali. cooling cut-outs in cowling front -THEN-enlarged 'window' and trailing edge stripped--extended white 'hoops' .
A great book Erik---worthy memorial in itself to a great author and great man.
Dave.

Thanks everybody,
The picture looked like it had a dark cowl but perhaps it is just in a shadow.

Yes Erik---but dark cowling did not 'go' with enlarged window though---it only got that by Sept.1918---with stripped cowling etc. and extra cooling slots.
cheers,
Dave.

Try this to make a link - once you have the picture showing on an internet page, right click on the address up on the menues above, select "copy", then come to a page like this, pick "reply" on the thread, and wen the window comes up, put your mouse in the message box, then right click agin and select "paste". It will look like the link below (note I only copied the URL and did the paste part; this forum put in the title for me - very cool!):
Airdrome Airplanes & GB3 Aviation Sopwith Pup
(I picked one I knew, heheheh).
