Here are details on the Second Annual Unofficial Cole Palen Memorial Meet on June 3 to be held at Red Hook High School:
Second Annual, Unofficial
Cole & Rita Palen Memorial
Free-Flight, Rubber-Scale Meet
Saturday, June 3, 2005
Red Hook High School, Red Hook, NY 12571
•Cole Palen gave the community his World-Famous Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome before he passed away in 1993. Cole was an avid model builder, so some of his friends and fans decided in 2005 to honor his memory with an annual Model Meet.
•December 29 marks Cole’s Birthday…Well, December is just too unpredictable to schedule an outdoor meet in New York’s Hudson Valley (again)…we did it successfully last year but we were just plain lucky to have the weather cooperate! This year we have decided to celebrate Cole’s memory in June. While we are at it, we will also honor the memory of Rita Palen for her important role in supporting Cole to achieve success in doing what he loved to do so much.
Come join us for a fun day of Flying!
This event is primarily for scale, rubber-powered models of full-scale aircraft built between 1900 and 1939. Awards will be given for Longest Individual Timed Flights of Pioneer Era, WWI, Golden Age models, and there will be a “Mixed Category” (for non-scale models & post 1940 scale models). Prizes for the Mass Launch, Pilot’s choice - (voted by the participants) and the special Taxi/shuffleboard event (for those of us who have no hope of winning the flying event) will also be awarded. Other categories may be added as plans for the event continue to develop. The primary goals of this celebration are to remember Cole & Rita Palen and to have a lot of fun while doing so.
Tentative Schedule:
8:00 am - Meet at Red Hook High School Soccer Field and register.
9:00 am – Flying and taxi events commence.
??? pm – Awards presentation at conclusion of official timed flights. Flying can continue for as long as anyone would like to fly.
Please let us know if you are interested in participating, and what you are building, or bringing to the event. If you need plans for any particular model that you might like to build, we’ll try to help you locate them.

Directions: to Red Hook High School
From the NYS Thruway: Red Hook High School is located just West of the main intersection of Rt. 199 and Route 9 in the heart of Red Hook. From the NYS Thruway, take exit 19 and follow signs to the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge. Cross Bridge and make a left onto 199 at the second light. Go to the next light and make a right onto route 199 toward Red Hook. The school is located on the left side, just past the ball field (which you will see on your right). If you cross Rt. 9, you have passed the school. LOOK FOR SIGNS WHEN YOU GET NEAR THE AREA.
From the Taconic State Parkway: Get off at the Red Hook/Rhinebeck exit for 199. Head toward Red Hook. When you come to the fork in the road, bear right to remain on 199. Pass Route 9 and the school will be on your right. First you will see Red Hook Junior High School, and the High School follows it. If you pass a baseball field on the left while on Rt. 199, you have just passed the school. LOOK FOR SIGNS WHEN YOU GET NEAR THE AREA.
Other considerations:
Bad weather - if the weather looks questionable, call us. We have tentatively set a rain date of June 10 if it appears that the event will be a total washout.
Proxy entries - Let us know when you plan to send your model so we know when to expect it, and we’ll provide a mailing address at that time. We need to receive them by May 31. We can’t be responsible for any damage that the model(s) may incur, but will take the best possible care to prevent any damage from occurring. We’ll also need specific instructions on how to wind and where to hold each model that is sent. We will return your model (or what is left of it) to you soon after the event is over!
Special Rules - Let us know if you are interested in participating so we can send you details of our special rules. The event is intended to be more fun than competitive, but we do have some rules.
Entry Fee - There is no entry fee. If you would like to bring something for the collective group to eat and/or drink for the pre, post or during flying parties, please let us know in advance. We would appreciate it!
This event is not associated with Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome Airshows/Rhinebeck Aerodrome Museum
