Free Flight WW1 Models

Does anyone build free flight WW1 models? I've had a hard time finding any galleries online, so I figured I would start this thread and see if anyone had photos they would like to share. I'll get things started. Here's my F/F Sopwith Triplane...

I use to build, fly & compete at the AMA Nats in the late '60s. I won first place in the sr free flight scale in 1968 w/Fokker D8. My eldest brother Joe, won 1st in open 1962 w/Curtis P1B. Right now I'm building a 4-channel 1/8 scale, electric Fokker D.V

The DC Maxecuters often have WWI free flight scale modes on their website at www.tschmitt~his.com. Also do a google for flying aces club --a number of sites have photos of WWI stuff.

WWI aircraft are particularly well suited to free flight (rubber and powered) scale--it is often possible to duplicate the illusion of the real structure. They also fly very nice.

Nice job!

Hi Jon18,
Nice models! I'm just starting to get a bit more involved in FF, but I don't know a lot about it. Can you give some specs on your models? I'm most interested in:

Wingspans/wing areas -

Ready to fly weights -

Prop sizes - (home

Sizes and # of strands of rubber used -

Average Flight times -

Looks like you built them from scratch. Did you use your own plans, or build them from published plans?

Thanks very much,
SL DIII

Cole Palen remembered with FF model meet

This past December friends and admirers of the late Cole Palen held a meet for rubber-powered free-flight models to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Mr. Palen's birth. Prizes were given for models of WWI and Pioneer aircraft, and also for models representing later eras.

Model Airplane News has provided a nice online article on this event: http://www.modelairplanenews.com/onl...icles/cole.asp

There is also an article on the meet in the April 2006 issue of Flying Models: http://www.flying-models.com/

An informal model meet was felt to be a fitting tribute, as in addition to his well known work with full-size vintage airplanes, Cole Palen was a prolific builder of rubber-powered flying models.

A second Cole Palen tribute is scheduled for June 3, 2006 in Red Hook, New York.

Cole

greenknight, thanks for the post. This is great to know. I appreciate the links as well. I was close to Cole & Rita and Cole was the one who taught me how to build F/F model airplanes. The news of the model meet makes me wish I had the time to make a trip back to NY.

SLDIII- I will post answers to your questions as soon as I can locate some of the plans I used.

Wow, that's neat!

I first visited the Rhinebeck Aerodrome as a 10 year old in 1972, and in my high-school and undergraduate years took part in some of the Rhinebeck WWI R/C Jamborees. Those visits left an indelible impression on me, so I was also touched by the "Palen magic", but you seem to have really gotten the full dose. Lucky you!

I was delighted to be able to send a Proxy entry to fly in the December FF event.

Great looking models in your collection!
