Diesels

Does anybody out there have any thoughts, advice, etc., regarding model airplane diesel engines like PAW's or the Davis glow conversions? They look attractive on paper, but I'd be interested in any comments based on real life experience.

Thanks!

Roundel,

If you don't have a copy already, I'd highly recommend purchasing a copy of "Dr. Diesel's Diary" from Eric Clutton who also imports and sells PAW diesels in the US. It is a wealth of practical information on the care and feeding of model diesels:

DOCTOR DIESEL

Also, check out Carlson Engine Imports and the infor on their "How To" web page:
DIESEL INFORMATION

Several years ago (early '90s) I purchased a PAW 15 R/C from Eric Clutton and a Mills .75cc (~.045 cu. in.) Replica from Carlson. I bench ran both of them but have not flown them in models. The bench running helped me learn the starting and running techniques particular to diesels. Having Clutton's book close at hand was really helpful.

I tried different props on the little Mills, and it was interesting to see how large of a prop it would swing, and still run cool.

Hope this helps.

Greenknight:

Thanks!

After a long absence (and many delays), I plan to start building and flying control line this winter. With low noise of high importance in my area, I'll be going diesel or/and electric. Each has a number of other advantages over glow.
