That's a nice engine too and probably smoother than the gas 4-stroke. How black does your oil get in the B&S 4-stroke? I changed mine today and it's very black. Might just be from breaking in?

The one I ran last summer is now with Prop Nut.I drained the oil before shipping it but I don't remember what the oil looked like.My other one only has maybe an hour on it.I checked it and is dark but not really "black".Black may be OK for a new engine but "black and chunky" is not a good sign.Do you see any metal flakes it the oil? Also, what type of oil are you using?
I am taking advantage of the nice weather here and am doing a lot of painting on the DRI.I can see the light at the end of the tunnel!

J, Nothing in the oil that you can see. The engine was running strong and had no signs or sounds of anything wearing out. I'll see what happens to the fresh oil but it will be awhile. I am using the B&S recommended 30 weight, 4-stroke oil. What are you using? I did some painting today as well but it is kind of humid for painting. Good thing I have the "reactive reducer" to thin the paint. It really came out great if I do say so myself.

John Fitz,I am using Castrol all-synthetic 5W-30.
The good weather continues here in the Pacific Northwest and it is making painting a less frustrating experience than trying to paint when it's 50 degrees and raining.I gotta go get more masking tape but here is where the fuselage is at now.

LOL! Since all of the streaking on the fuselage is going to be covered by black and white paint,I just did a quickie job on it and it is too light.I just wanted to have the streaks visible from the inside and maybe a little bit through the exterior. However,in some regards, I think it came out better than my wings, which I fretted endlessly over.Go figure.

Thanks J, the DR1 is looking good! The straight B&S 30 weight oil is supposed to be for hot weather. I guess the 5W30 would work in cooler climate. I know it gets cooler at altitude so maybe the 5W30 is the way to go. Have to wait and ask PropNut what he is using too when he gets back from Germany I guess.

Getting closer! One more panel of black to do.The cross on the fuse looks a little funny now,but let me explain.Using a mask,I painted an "iron cross"and then painted over the edges with thinned white paint.I will go back and repaint the balkenkreuze (sp?) to get the proper outline. You should be able to see the old cross outlines a little bit through the thin white paint(I hope).

J,
It's looking very good, and I daresay you're doing Fritz Loerzer's Dr.I, nicht war? Greg's rendition of it in the latest Windsock Dr.I book had me thinking of this scheme as well...
