Interesting Book

Albatros_Ace:

This book is good because it shows the state of knowledge back in the 40s and 50s, when most of these drawings were done. It is an enjoyable book to read, but beware of many gross inaccuracies that are found in the drawings. Most (if not all) of the information has been superceded or updated over the years, so take it all with a grain of salt.

Some of the names found in this book are Joseph Nieto and William Wylam, draftsmen who really did a lot of work and created some lovely drawings. I am certain that if they had the information that's available to us today, their work would be virtually flawless.

FWIW, I've had my copy since 1988...

MAN book

I have this book also (Vol. 1). I think it's worth the money. I used the Loening M-8 drawings from this book to build my 1/4 scale model.

MAN book

It depends on how much of a perfectionist you are. Some people say there are inaccuracy's in the Wylam drawings. You should check out the Peter Westburg scale drawings you can get from the National Air and Space Museum. Don't know if he drew the subject you are looking for but I have some of his drawings and they are outstanding. They are also reasonable to buy. If you go to the NASM web site you will find a list of his drawings. You can also just e-mail the NASM and tell them what you are looking for and they will usually send you stuff for free. I got some original construction drawings for my Loening that way. Here's a picture of my model built from the MAN book Tom Stark drawings.

I have both books. They provide a lot of info on several aircraft.

As for accuracy, I have seen several comments questioning the accuracy of many of the Wylam drawings. I do not know for sure.

That said, if you build a plane matching the drawings, you have the documantation required for scale outline, right or slightly off.

They are worth the money for general reference if nothing else.

Three views

Agree with Bookmaker. The standard for judging in R/C scale is the degree to which your model matches the documentation you present. The documents, even three views, might be in error to some small degree, but the judge is not supposed to take into account what he presumes to know about the prototype, only the accuracy of your miniature rendition of the aircraft presented in your documentation. ....John
