Aviatik 30.40

Well, I am finally back on the Aviatik and since the original thread has been closed I am starting this one. Power will be a Briggs & Stratton 40cc, 4-stroke I have done a gas/glow conversion on.

WOW! That is one great airplane. What an unusual subject to pick, good for you.

Looking forward to following this build.

Cheers,

Aviatik

Glad you like it WF2. Made a little more progress today. Got the throttle servo installed and sort of copied what Del did with the GTM Dr1. I had a nice Nelson throttle arm which works very well for this. I am using ball link and a turnbuckle. Servo is mounted in between the cowl ring and the firewall. It's all very strong and adjustable. Del, if you happen to read this can you tell me how long your elevator and rudder cables are?

Aviatik

It's actually 1:3.2 and the w/s is only 89.8". It was a small aircraft.

A parasol monoplane derivative of the Aviatik 30.27, the Aviatik 30.40 was powered by a similar 160hp Steyr Le Rhone 11-cylinder rotary engine, and only one prototype was built and flown during the summer of 1918. The Aviatik 30.40 was of wooden construction. The forward fuselage was covered by light metal panels and the remainder of the fuselage was ply covered. The wing had fabric skinning, and steel-tube bracing struts were employed.

Aviatik

WF2, thanks for posting that picture. I have that one too. If you look closely at that photo you will see that it has been altered. Looks like black lines have been drawn under the stab. and in a few other places. Have any idea why that would have been done? Aaron Weaver was very kind to send me a copy of that photo thanks to Taz also. I only had the photo of the left side before and the one from the rear. BTW, the wing was the same on the Aviatik D1. so I have been using the Vienna Technical Museum walk around of their D1 for details. Koloman Mayrhofer has been a great help too. Here's a pic of my cowl almost done.

Hey John,

Looking at the black-line in the photo seems to me as photographic touch-up. This was so done because the demarcation between the structure and the background or structure on structure details blended together.

I wonder if this effort of Aviatik was to compete with Fokker and other manufactures to produce a simple, low cost, fast an agile front line fighter?

Nice cowling by the way.

Aviatik

WF2, According to the book, Austro-Hungarian Army Aircraft Of world War One, "the 30.40 was proposed for production by Thone & Fiala. But until the supply of Voltol was assured, the LFT was forced to exclude the rotary-engined fighter from further consideration". The 30.40 was built to meet "interceptor requirements" and only weighed 1292lbs fully loaded. It must have been a pretty good aircraft.

Hi Koloman, glad you are looking in. Sorry my workmanship will be no match for yours. Hope you like my model when it's finished. BTW, do you agree that the tail skid of the 30.40 would be like that of the D1? I can not see it well enough in the photo's but it seems other Aviatik prototypes (30.27, 30.30) used the same type tail skid as the D1. Cheers.
