1/6 Fokker Dr1

Don (abufletcher) from Japan and I are building 1/6 scale Fokker Dr1's.
We are using Joseph Nieto drawings enlarged to 1/6 scale.

Don has made good progress on the fuselage .
He is using 3mm bamboo dowelling for the fuselage .

I will be using 3mm walnut dowel for my fuselage as I cannot get bamboo dowelling here in Oz.

I will be starting this week.
This a photo of my (60) 0.8mm ply Ribs and the capping jig I had CNC cut.
All the Ribs will be capped with 1mm balsa

I would think walnut to be heavy, can you get birch, or even spruce sticks. I guess if your building for show, weight would not matter.

Hi Mode One

This is what Don came up with

Material facts (weight per 10cm):

5x5mm hardwood (Japanese cypress): 1g
4x4mm hardwood (Japanese cypress): 0.6g

4mm aluminum tube: 1.5g
3mm aluminum tube: 1g

3mm hardwood dowel: 0.33g
3mm bamboo dowel: Just a bit more.

I have not found 3mm bamboo or birch dowel down here in OZ.
To get birch dowel shipped from the US would cost me $50.00 us
just in shipping/ handling

Grover...good luck with your build no matter what material you end up using...and please do keep us posted on your progress.

I built a 1/4th size Dr1 and Nieuport 17 from Cleveland plans over 20 years ago. Nothing as detailed as what you are building. It was a fun project made out of pine with Masonite wing ribs. Very heavy....but they looked good hanging from the ceiling of my garage.

Got a bit of the Fuse done today .
After much hassle with Gorilla Glue I will not be using it again.

I want to try some new stuff out on this build.
I got some Weldbond it is made in Canada
It worked great sets in hard in under 30 minutes

Here is the Fuse so far and boy is it delicate.
