Rhinebeck 2009 Photos
Hopefully people will post photos of the great flying from this weekend. Was there all day Sunday and the weather was superb.
To start, here's a shot where it seems Mr. Goering was just sent down burning by a Camel.

A friend and I went for the first time in 10 years. I really enjoyed myself and got lots of information for model choices for my new DL50, (thanks to anyone here who was patient with me!) I was amazed at my personal "transformation" - I used to think of 1/6" scale a good size - now the 1/4 scales look positively handy! You have to go to 1/3 to be "large"!!
We should all thank BalsaUSA for their model lines, I'd guess that 50-60% of models of all scale were theirs. I talked with the guys in the trailer for a long time and they were very helpful.
The full scale airshow wasn't what I remembered, (I went yearly during the 70s and 80s), but not as bad as I had feared from some of the comments I've heard. On the Saturday the only WWI planes flying were the Spad 7 and N24/27 (both modern replicas with modern engines), the Albatros DVa and the Jenny, (original I think). The pre-war Bleriot, the Caudron GIII, the Hanriot, and the Avro 504 did hops. I was impressed that they continued right through the rain.
Here is a shot of three of the prize winners, the big BalsaUSA DH4, a 1/3 scale Camel, and Ansaldo SVA.
Martin
Edit: I'll try again in a minute - this is the DH4, and electric Morane Saulnier A1 from the BUSA kit, a scale running Gnome engine, (gas and castor) in a DH1 I think.

Here is the Ansaldo, the Camel, a 1/3 BUSA N.28, and a 1/3(!)Avro 504. There were two of these Avros and they flew beautifully slowly overhead.

I missed it this year. The weather sounds like a semi repeat of last year, except it was worse (that was the year of the hurrcane) and Sunday was actually rather nice. I can recall some years going wayyy back with temps in the upper 40's and winds to almost gale force.
I'm pleased to see a return of the models to be more WW1 like since the format change. I still have lots of fond memories of the old format with the bomb drop, balloon bust and spot landing, as well as the infamous combat event. All those mid airs! :-) AN lets not forget the guys who who work on some massive Handley Paige bomber for years only to not know how to fly it well, or have it untested and crash or wander off into the trees somewhere each year. Then there waw the Large Junkers J-1 on an early AM test flight taking off into the fog and disappearing! We tacked it for a long time by listening for the sound. As I recall it fiially popped out of the clouds and landed safely.
Sometimes the state of the Aerdrome and the show make me a bit sad to see how far down the show has come. Cole it seems, would always make a special effort to make the Jamboree shows the most spectacular of the season. 6 or 7 WW1 types in the air all at the same time, flak, bombs, smoking wounded planes.. Ahhh memories.

I have to agree with just about all you said. I haven't been in 15 years (talking about the full-scale show) and it wasn't what I remembered. Certainly could have done without the Great Lakes Trainers cutting toilet paper ribbons for as long as they did, or even the Super Stearman "mini airshow". Being up in the museum and hangars made me downright sad.
Without the RC I would have been a little sore about making the trip. Speaking of the RC, I do wish there had been more time for organized flying events like you mention. As it was, it was just hours of open flying with some select planes flying to start off the show at 2.
Overall a good time and I know there were a lot of people who had a nice day, too.

The Glenn Torrance Models Site has nice pics and a little writeup.
He's at FLYGTM dot COM
Here's what he had to say....
Sept 14th. I just returned from the Rhinebeck event in upper New York state. The weather was a little unique this year, for the first day or so, cold and rain... Although, we did get some flying in on Saturday and Sunday turned out to be a bright sunny day of full flying. Overall, fun was had by all. I was glad to meet a lot of you and see so many lovely WW1 subjects. Rhinebeck makes a marvelous back drop for this event. Even the full scale guys were impressed with this first photo which shows a working 3rd scale Gnome 160 rotary engine. The engine was built by the genius of Ray Williams. The crowd was in awe when Ray demonstrated the engine. Just a masterpiece that words can't describe. Sorry but Ray does not make these engines for sale, just likes to make one for his own satisfaction, which we really appreciate his dedication. A few more photos show more details. Following that, the next two photos show a rare model done by Rich Feroldi which is this 3rd scale Ansaldo bi-plane. Powered by a Quadra 100 and weighing in at 48lbs, Rich reports it flies and handles very well. I guess that is why he took it to Top Gun this year. We see a Mick Reeve's model now and then, which this next photo shows a lovely 3rd scale Camel. A lot of real nice detail in this model. The next photo shows the overall runway size of Rhinebeck from the full scale planes all the way back to the r/c pilot tents; to the left of all this are the museum buildings. Following this photo is a good looking Nieuport bi-plane sporting the "Buy Bonds" poster on the lower wing. Balsa USA hawk their goodies near the front entrance. They were quite busy over the weekend and actually took my sponsored Best WW1 award for their new DH4 model. Congrat guys. Here's another rather seldom seen model, a BE-2. Looks quite nice just basking in the sun. I did mention a new announcement at the show. This is my tent and the new 3rd scale Fokker D7 prototype for the upcoming kit. Yes, that light green color matches the D7 in the USAF museum. I will be doing that subject. You can also see some SE5a parts as well as a wicker basket seat which will be used in a future kit. The last two photos sum up Rhinebeck this year as it is the centennial for the Bleriot, 1909 - 2009. This painting rested against the WW1 Aero / Skyways tent. The last photo shows Rhinebeck's original Bleriot which they ran up and down the runway. Still running after all these years. Next week I am off to the Dayton, Ohio Dawn Patrol. There we will have a lot of full scale planes and our models flying next to the USAF museum. Stop by and we can chat WW1. As always any comments or questions just email me. - Glenn

Dear Marty: I got GREAT shots of that Avro in 2008....
Dear Martin Irvine:
The PIPE Here again...I've been a year away from work (UNemployment from the financial crisis) so an Old Rhinebeck trip was simply NOT in the cards for me this year !!!
I spotted your photo of what APPEARS to be the very same Avro I got some GREAT shots of last year (2008) at ORA, which occurred only two weeks before I was laid off on September 19th of last year.
Those shots are viewable. among the ones I shot at the 2008 ORA RC event (on Sunday ONLY, because of Hurricane Hanna's Saturday deluge that weekend) with my Pentax K100D digital SLR at The 1st SERIOUS Trial-Vivitar S1 70-210mm with a K100D! - PentaxForums.com ...
...it's just that since I HAVE been laid off, with two interviews that were unfortunate "busts", and waiting now to hear on a third I had just over a week ago, there's just not much "hiring activity" as yet...!
Whenever the Old Guard of Messrs. Cassens, Taylor, Kopecky, Ackley, Polapink, et al CAN be back at Old Rhinebeck, THEN the airshow will start looking more and MORE like it did when Cole was still with us...
...as only the people that knew Cole himself, so well, can actually bring BACK the amazing atmosphere many of us ORA "long-timers" remember from those past years...!!!
Hope you enjoy those 2008 ORA photos...I've still got some that I haven't posted on the 'Net as yet, and perhaps soon those will be going up as well...
Yours Sincerely,
The PIPE!

Rhinebeck Jamboree videos
Greetings,
The 2009 Jamboree was my first and despite the poor weather I had a great time. My brother cam out from Michigan and I came from Maine. We had been to the ORA several times for the shows and museums but had not made it to the Jamboree. I have a lot of pictures, but not as nice a quality as the ones posted above. What I do have are links to several videos from the weekend that I have posted on Youtube if people would like to take a look.
I am a new member to the forum although I've enjoyed it's content for several years.
Jay
