RAF FE8 Article

Hello All,
I have the plans for the Gary Sunderland FE8 but I don't have the construction article from March 2006 RC Scale International that may be able to answer some of the questions I have regarding the plans. I've checked with the publishers site and unfortunately that issue is not available. Does anyone have that issue? And if so, would you be kind enough to share it with me.

Thanks,
Paul

Exclamation I wouldn't mind getting that myself, either...

Dear Paul:

The PIPE Here...and ever since seeing COLE PALEN's reproduction "Effy-Ate" at Old Rhinebeck, FLYING on real rotary engine power, I've long thought about eventually doing up the "Effy" up as an RC Scale model, preferably in Giant Scale.

I DO have a copy of Windsock Datafile No.74 (at 74 RAF FE8 ) on ol' Effy, and a few shots I've gotten off the Internet (as well as a few vintage shots of Cole's Effy, from MY OWN Pentax film SLR camera that are now up at colepalen.com) are also parts of the volume of info I'm accumulating, that will help in eventually making up a set of Giant Scale CAD model construction plans of the British pusher fighter that IS NOT the all-too-often modeled de Havilland D.H.2.

I'm also thinking that the magazine...RC Scale International...MIGHT have stopped publishing, as I do remember hearing that magazine title as being one that has "gone south" in the past few years...

...so you MIGHT have to get a bit more help in getting a copy of that article that you're looking for.

If you ARE in the USA, however, the AMA's library in Muncie, IN, as mentioned at Academy of Model Aeronautics - Magazines , MIGHT have that very issue (March 2006) that you're looking for, and you COULD contact them to see if they could reproduce the article for your needs...

...and I'm somewhat inclined to think a bit of help from the UK's Public Records Office might also be a good idea for getting Effy-Ate factory drawings as well.

Best of luck in finding that issue, somewhere, OR a reprint of the article (perhaps, from that AMA Library)...and in closing, I'm just a bit curious as to just what SIZE of a scale model do the Gary Sunderland plans for the "Effy" would build up into, anyway...!!!

Yours Sincerely,

The PIPE!

I saw Gary fly this model at Pakenham earlier last year. It was fairly small for one of Gary's designs. I seem to remeber somewhere between 55-60" span.

Cheers,

Hugh

Hello Paul,
I don't have the RC Scale International article, but I have Gary Sunderland's FE-8 construction article that appeared in the March 2005 Flying Scale Models. This model is 1/5 scale at 75.6". If this is the same aircraft, let me know what your question is and I will try to find an answer. I am in the middle of building Gary's Dehavilland DH-4 and his plans have been somewhat of a challenge.

Thank you everyone for your replies!

Bill those are the plans that I have. What I'm trying to figure out is how Gary tied the booms to the wings and how the booms are tied to the horizontal stab. The plans are quite unclear on this. Does the article reference this area or show any pics of these areas? Again thanks for the reply and assistance.

Regards,
Paul

Hello Paul,
Yes the article describes how to make the attachments, but I don't think that I could explain the steps very well.

If you could PM me your email address, I have scanned the page and I will send it to you.

Does the model fly better than the real thing?

I've been told Cole hated flying one, and none of the pilots at Owls Head like flying the one here either!

Hello Ron,
After I suggested that I could email the article, I received a reply that he didn't want to give out his email address. I still have the article sitting here on my computer desk.

Thanks for the reply Bill. I was wondering if it was the same Paul Cameron who built a superb Pfalz DVIII and had photos if the model posted on the GTM site some time ago?
