Really, what could have beat that? Was it some sort of WWII model?

It was a B-24 built from a semi kit of some sort and a Byron Corsair. I always thought those things were pretty highly prefabricated. Anyway, from the photos I saw, I was not particularly impressed. Maybe it's a case of "oh no, not another (add name of overbuilt subject here)" but both models didn't seem to be at the level of Dave Platt's work, for instance.
Keep the faith Allan! Your Siemens is a masterpiece, truly crafted beautifully and a unique subject, and it will place 1st in the right setting.

Some judges need to find another line of work. I know it's a major trek, but your Siemens-Schuckert would put a real scare in the competition at the Blue Max event this March 12th & 13th in Florida..........John

Thanks guys.
The judging at that show is apparently done by one person, doing about 20 different categories including cars, boats, armor, etc. Each category has a first, second and third award so the guy is rather overworked.
There were some very nice models in the show, many of which got overlooked or underrated.

Sounds sort of like your typical Mall Show, ARFs beating out scratch or kit built airplanes, judged by people with maybe a limited or at least only very general knowledge on the subject.

Excellent!
Hi Allan:
that is a beautiful SSW D.III. prefect to the last detail. One of your admirers commented on the seven laminations of the wotan propeller, if he looked a little closer he would have seen the red an gold logos on the propeller. Absolutely exquistite, excellent workmanship. It should take Best of Show!
Blue skies Allan,
Dan-San

Allan, I have to say I feel your pain! You would assume the judging used at this, what I would think to be, AMA sanctioned event to be better! Obviously, the judging task is considered unimportant, by the event coordinators. This makes the event, as far as model display is concerned, to be nothing more then a mall show. I have attended many of these events and learned a long time ago that I don't go to these events for the competition, I go for something to do related to R/C, during the long Winter months up here in Northern Minnesota and for the Camaraderie! Hope you at least had a fun time!

That is one of the best looking SSW DIII's I have seen. I have built two 1/4 scale planes and yours look way better than mine!! I didn't go to the build on rcu may be I will but I love the prop. I am also envious of the louvered panel. I cannot make one that looks good! While I am on a roll with compliments.. excellent work on the sheeting and the glossy finish is dead on from what I have seen from documentation. I am really impressed, very nice job! Now build a BIG one!!! D. Johnson is supposed to be comming out with a 1/3 scale plan I think. I am going to really get into that when he gets the plans done.

I did make the static propeller. I don't think it would handle the actual stress of a flight, plus it is way to big for my RCV60sp engine to turn. I could try it with the engine on for a photo...
Thanks again, everyone, for the nice comments and support. It means a lot to me (especially after that third place).
Dan San Abbott, my special thanks goes to you, both for your kind post and your help along the way (I worked from some camo colors you sent me - I don't know how close it came out to those chips but that was my goal). If you don't mind I may print up your post and mount it next to (but above) the third place plaque from the AMA.
