Guillows Fokker and SE5

Here are some pictures of my Guillows builds. I build these for freeflight and do fly them......The new Guillows laser cut kits are awsome.

looks good was wondering when they were gonna start laser cutting them rather than die crunching. I haven't bought one in years just because of that and always hated the sterlings I got that were never cut just printed on. i got tired of gluing split wood back together

Super job on both!

Very nice! We could use some more free flight threads here on the Drome.

What kind of flight times are you getting? I did one of the old Gulliows Nieuport 28's a couple years back. It's built way too heavy to get any decent times. ...from me anyway. I've got a SE5 I'm thinking of sanding down the wood and leaving out some stringers to lighten it up.

Salute,
Steve

The SE5 flies great. The SE5 was built with all replacement wood. No other modifications were made. The Fokker has only been out for a test glide, and she glides real fast.

Oldies but goodies. Thanks for sharing.

I have a half built Guillows Nieuport 11 (17?) that's been waiting to be finished for...oh.... 40 years. Been thinking about making it into an electric RC. Probably silly considering what you get in a similar ARF these days.

I built the same design SE5a when I was in Jr. Hi, before they were laser cutting. I set it up with 1/2A control line - I didn't know the rudder was supposed to keep tension on the lines. It looked real good for about 15 secs. I did buy the new kit and will go with rubber power. The series with laser cutting looks fine!

scigs30: Great work. They look super!! Ahhh the memories of all the Guillow, Sterling and Cleveland kits I've built over the years. I still have half a dozen "stick and tissue" models sitting around strictly static display.

Nice to see someone keeping the traditional ways alive.
Every so often I'll break out my stash of balsa and old Cleveland plans and whip one up.

I'm sorry Scigs that I forgot to add that the covering job on those two is impecable. I hope I can do half as well when I get to mine.

These were the best part of being a kid for me in the late 1960s, early 1970s. I had the Nieuport 11, Dr.I, Camel (18 inch), and a Sterling Camel 24 inch. Sad days were when my father talked me in to flying them off the roof! The big Camel went up in a climbing turn, then a split-S down to crash. Moments later it was in flames down in an undeveloped lot... the .049 conked. The little fuel tank blew up. The other Camel (18 inch) flew great, was rubber powered. It took off well from a concrete parking lot and landed just as nicely. Flying it off the roof was less fun. The landing gear was torn off first... then the top wing. As a low wing monoplane... it flew awesome!

I wasn't happy about taking it from it's safe place hanging above my bed in my room along with the Dr.I and Nieuport. At least my dad had fun! (and I did a little bit.) I had a Comet Triplane... but didn't build it, it had that wierd X-rib configuration. The vacuform parts were better than the Guillow ones.

I have a few unbuilt that I grabbed from some old shops. I have a Rumpler C.V, a Dr.I (partially built), a Sterling Albatros D.II. I did have the Sterling Spad XIII, but my friend needed a project for bonding time with his son, so I gave it up.
