Sir Skip,
About a year ago, I posted a overview concerning the no-longer-made VOODOO/3dFX graphics cards ("Do you think you can just GLIDE through life?" or some such nonsense). GLIDE is native to these cards...
My conclusion was simple: Voodoo 3000 as a median; 4500 better, 5500 BEST...
The 3500 card is really only worth it if you want to watch television on your PC; otherwise, it's really no better than the 3000.
And, of course, opt for AGP over PCI...
Now, WHAT'S THE REAL DIFFERENCE IN THE NUMBERS?
Well, if you have a 3000, you see black pixels far off in the distance; on a 4500 and a 5500, you see COLORED pixels... ie the silver pixels are usually Allies, the pixels with other colors are usually Huns. It's the difference between "bogeys" and "bandits"...
Yes, you could still be perfectly happy with a true accelerator card, the Voodoo 1000, which works with your current card or board, but that would only be if your machine just couldn't get the most out of a card with a higher number, because of chip speed or total memory capacity issues... Still, don't come crying to me when your clouds suddenly develope straight edges!
These cards are still readily available on eBay... and if you use PayPal, you can purchase them with confidence... that's a joke, son, a joke...
Just the same, I've made MANY purchases on eBay, and, for the clear majority of times, I've been completely satisfied... I even bought a Sanke card of Boelcke... and even a Voodoo 1000... and artwork by Russell Smith (a contributor here at the good ol' Forum)... and... and...
Lastly, concerning GLIDE wrappers-- I've heard both good and bad about them; BUT, a co-worker of mine, whom I introduced to RB3d and who also used 3dFX cards, claims that while the wrappers are good, they still don't match the original GLIDE...
Hals und Beinbruch,
Captain Lewis
