Flying Corps on XP
Hi All,
After various problems I have managed to install Rowan's Flying Corps, original version, on my new computer with XP. All is fine EXCEPT it just will not recognise any joystick I try. Using the keypad is a real pain.
Anyone know a way round this? Any help gratefully received!
Cheers

Sorry, can't help with the joystick but would love to know how you got it running (almost running) on XP. Didn't think it could be done. If it can I'll dig my copy out.

Ditto here - I had it running on Win95 about 5 years ago but could never get it to run on Win98 or WinME, which is what I'm on now. I thought it was, for its time, a good game - don't know how it'd be now but I'd love the chance to find out. What's your secret?

Hi,
Sorry I've taken so long to get back to you.
Basically, I used the XP Compatibility Wizard. Go to Programs/Accessories/Compatibility Wizard. When installing the game choose program in CD Drive, set to W98/Me, 256 colours, 640x480 screen res, and then install (I used Medium). Once installed exit the program. Start Compatibility Wizard again, but this time choose FC from the list of programs and choose the same settings. Play first time from the wizard, and hey presto!
Worked for me, hope it will for you!
Good luck!
Bob

PS
Forgot to mention: this is the original Flying Corps, not the later version: and I still can't get the joystick to work!
Cheers,
Bob

Wow! I've fiddled with FCG for a week now down loading all the patches and it would not load.
I read your post and Bingo! it loaded the first time. Thank you.
How ever, it will not let me play. It keeps telling me it cannot find something called "smackw.dll" or "an illegal instruction was exicuted at address 01aa2118. press ok to terminate"
So close.
Thanks.

Smackw32.dll
Suzywong,
SmackW32.dll appears in the main Rowan 'Fly' folder. Apparently the original file does not always work with later Windows programs, but I think you can maybe find a newer version to download somewhere out there in cyber-space. Sorry I don't have a url to pass on.
Good Luck!
Bob

smackw.dll is part of the Smacker video codec from RAD Game Tools. It is used for the cinematics. You can download the file from underdogs.org.

The link Underdog.org would not take me to anyplace I could recognize so I put SmackW32.dll into google and Presto, I was at the download.
Thanks for the tip.

smackw.dll and SmackW32.dll are two different files. You can still get smackw.dll from the underdogs link from the above post. In the box at the Underdogs page, enter SMACKW.DLL. It's case sensative. It will then take you to a page where you can download the file or a compressed version of the file.
