It's actually rather beautiful Jim, but although it was originally being designed as a full-fledged flight sim, the realism factor was decidedly dialed down before release because it's primary audience was targeted for Xbox.
The descriptive term of it's out-of-the-box gameplay is "arcade".
Still, you can see that the designers put a lot of work into the core components, with nice visuals, and some clever gameplay features, but the missions are "comic book" oriented.
Many simmers worked to mod the game with help from a 'insider', and annoying things were changed, as well as opening up many "how-to's" for things like skinning, and some editing capability was enabled.
If you want more incite into WOV, the core fan forum website is at SimHQ (I think you'll need to be registered to view if I recall):

Anyway, if you're looking to Winds of War for its' visual fidelity, it's nice in that regards.
