homebrew minis game

dunno if this is appropriate (since it is nothing more than a selfish plug), but i really have little pride to lose, so...

to anyone in the minneapolis/st.paul, mn area: i am/will be running playtests of my dogfighting game at The Source (comics and game store) this month. i'm hoping to get attendance/feedback from a wide variety of gamers/devotees.

What time?

i'm there around 5 - 5:30 to set up (...which is why i missed your message yesterday, sorry), and try to get the dice rolling by 6:30 at the latest: since the store closes at 9 that gives us at least two hours --the minimum for a game in which no one (including me!) knows the rules very well.

last night's game went well: did stachel's first mission from "blue max". things ended sort of like the movie: bruno downed an se5, while poor fabian ended up spinning down out of control (though he probably would have recovered...we didn't get to play it out). the other se5 ( =myself as the "untrained replacement") did little more than blast though the battle at top speed unable to turn around and get into the action, leaving his leader at the mercy of the two huns.

all in all a good playtest: discovered things that worked and things that didn't. the other three players (experienced minis guys but not airwar devotees) thought the rules worked well to capture the spirit of dogfighting without getting bogged down in the details of flying.

unless another group bangs on my door (so to speak --don't hesitate to ask...), i'll be taking next week off (to paint more planes!) --the next game will be the evening of the 23rd. i'd like to do a '16-early '17 scenario, but soldering up the booms on those pesky dh's and fe's is tedious!

Hi Don,
I just happened to catch your name as I was skimming through some forum threads. Good luck with your venture, I hope you picked up some useful bits from my book. I can recommend some reference sources if you are still in the market.
Regards,
Norm.

fwiw, a reminder to those in the area that i'll be running my game this evening. if enough people (6) show up, i'll play another "blue max" movie scenario: bruno and willi in dr1's taking on 5 se5a's. (sorry: the booms on the dh's lie undone on my workbench, so no "hawker v. richthofen" scenario...)

even if you've never played a game, your opinion is welcome: the thoughts of devotees on how well the game captures the genre/era are as important to me as those of gamers on how well it works as a dice-rolling exercise.

I'm planning on showing up to the source Monday. So if you happen to be running I'll play.

Dawn Patrol?

Are any of you Twin Cities gamers interested in checking out the local Dawn Patrol game?
We have a decent number of players that still play the 80's TSR game 'Dawn Patrol' and we personally know and play with the game creator, Mike Carr, who is currently working on the 8th edition. We have even incorporated the new WoW miniatures into the game for a 3D effect! Check out our website if you are interested-
Ghost_Jasta

and also check out the games 'main' site that is more regularly updated here-
IndySquadron.com

Drop me a line for more info as we usually play more in the fall!

dunno who pokes their nose into this thread, but i'd like to invite any interested people to check out/participate in a discussion i began on gaming ww1 dogfighting over in a "yahoo groups" forum:

WW1aircombatgaming : WW1 aviation gaming and discussion site

it seems to me that two groups exist: those who game within a particular genre, and those who know about a particular genre. i'm trying to game ww1 dogfighting, and would appreciate comments/feedback from both sides: the gamers have a grasp of what works in translating action to a tabletop, and the knowledgable understand what really happened (or could happen given the existing parameters). input from both sides is required to make a good game, and i would appreciate getting as much of both sides as i possibly can.

thank you
don
