Rainbase,
IIRC, on the old RB3D, there is a start up screen that comes up that has an iron cross in each corner. Clicking on one of these several (six? comes to mind) times, I was told, would enable you to run the game without the CD in the machine.

Yeah, that does it. You simply need to click the iron cross in the upper right hand corner 6 times. It will launch, no problem.

Wow this is a great sim experience !!

I have so far stumbled through to managing the quick fight set-up. I guess I am lucky with the 3dfx glide card because there are fog effects to simulate clouds or at least the lack of visibility within them. Also the Force Feedback stick is great doesn't seem to slow my fps down at all.

Just flying single planes against the AI on novice level is a challange. There seems to be a whole lot to this game!

Well since my game setup right now is what would be called straight out ot he box. I don't understand why the planes had not been given more artistic attention. With the Force Feebback flight stick you get the feel of a great flight model. Landscape is fine, almost cartoonish in a way but thats fun doesn't have to be totally real.

Zeeram,
Please take a step back and realize when this game was published, it is VERY old. The /ac, as they are drawn in the game, represent state of the art at the time the game was published. This game came out years before IL-2 of CFS2 or CFS3. (Personally, I hate CFS3, consider it almost like a cartoon.)
If you want them to look better, there are a number of add-ons you can find, the folks here can turn you on to a lot of stuff for the game to make it look better, alter performance, etc. Good Luck!

Yes I guess you are right Warren but I was comparing it in my mind to another flight sim that came out around that time, European Air War. EAW even straight out of the box was truly amazing graphics for those with a 3dfx glide card. Total different gaming engine I know. Anyways I am enjoying Red Baron and think I will be learning it for a good while. Haven't even tried to do a mission yet.

EAW? Hmmm, this got me to thinking. Someone please correct me if I am way off base on this.
Now, I cannot remember what year RB3D came out, but I am thinking that when it was released, that it was basically RB2 just with the 3D aspect added. Am I wrong on this? The reason I got to thinking about this, is that when EAW came out, it was a brand new game. Shortly after RB3D is when Dynamix/Sierra started their long slide out of the sim market. (A shame, as the first four sims I ever had were AOP, RB, AOE, and AOD in that order. I enjoyed them all greatly.)

I know you are enjoying RB Zeeram, I just didn't know if you knew how old it really was.

Hello!

To visually (and not only) increase Red Baron's qualities, the big patches of today are (in no particular order):

1. Revenge of the Jastas III at: Revenge of the Jastas III
( forum: Revenge of the Jastas - Login )

2. Western Front Patch at: Society of WWI Sim Artisans-Western Front Patch
( forum: http://forums.delphiforums.com/TheWesternFront/start )

3. Hell's Angels Superpatch: http://www.hellsangels.firstflare.com

Much better terrains (independent of above patches), again in no particular order (each is different):

a. PLas1Va (Promised Land 1)
b. PL2 (Promised Land 2)
c. OTE GLide

At SimHQ RB forum Skidmark has a sticky post with every link you want to know about.

Also for each of those patches, Greybeard has great flight models that can be downloaded at:

vonOben's Flight Sim Mods (RB 'Misc' page).

These are 2 movies to see how it can look:

Another Fight on Vimeo

Salute!

Off-Topic, but flight-sim related, for anyone who has ever tried hard.

Zeeram,
This is especially for you, however I think that anybody who has ever tried to master their new flight sim, no matter what period, can appreciate this. Go to:

Dart's Page - IL-2 and PF fun and training videos!

Then scroll down to movies, then go to "Flying for the First Time". Pretty true to life IMHO. Fun nevertheless. Enjoy.
