What is best for games - simultanoeous or turn based?

I have played...

Red Baron...s
Richt. war...t
Blue Max...s
Stringbags...t

With turn based games they are more predictable and therefore more deadly. Simult. games are more random and you can fly around for ages not shooting anything!

I would like others to comment?

what is the best game?

Regards

Andy

Well, as you probably know, I like Blue Max. I feel its simultaneous movement feels more natural to me. The tailing rules help with giving advantage to the person who manages to get behind his enemy.

There's a very loyal group of folks who play Dawn Patrol/Fight in the Skies. I'd be interested in hearing how they feel about turn-based play.

Regards,

yes I have heard some good stuff about Dawn Patrol.....

Turn based games end up with all the planes tail to tail...is this what happened in reality?

alos they are "easy to work out" for good wargamers.

The air of mystery kept by trying to double guess your opponent in simult. movement games is what you are after. However, games like Red Baron have too much movement each turn and you can "lose" your opponenet. Blue Max "seems" to have just enough movement so you don't completely lose touch and generous tailing rules help.

For me both systems are interresting. I cannot imagine games like Wings or Airforce played in another way than simultaneously. But those games are (relatively) simple to play. I'm one of the playtesters for Canvas Falcons. In that game the planes are moved one after the other. There is a phase, at the beginning of each game turn, where the order of move is determined, based on the a/c category and the ability of each pilot to take the initiative. But we're testing a new concept, based on the aggressivity of each pilot and the possibility to "fix" one of more than one other pilot. I think that new system is very realistic, and gives to the game played in such way more realism than any simultaneous play.

I tend to find simultaneous movement more realistic, but I enjoyed Dawn Patrol a lot and I am very curious about Canvas Falcons. I do not think that simultaneous is necessarly the best.

But while DP has non-simultaneous movement and simultaneous fire (if I do not remember wrong), RW has alternate movement with everyone firing as soon as he moved, and that's a bit too much in my opinion. Played it a lot, but... too obsolete for my tastes.

Ace of Aces is another great simultaneous system. Fast and effective!

Bye bye,

Andrea
