I thought I'd start a new thread rather than continue to hijack Red Baron's which I have followed with interest.
Having ruined my RB II disk I at last aquired a copy of RB 3D. Following the advice given in Red Baron's thread I was able to download and install PL, CM 11 and WFP. Everything went really well so I got cocky and installed (or at least I think I did) parts 1, 2 and 3 of the 1916 WFP. No poblems so I got even cockier and installed the 1917 and 1918 WFP. CRASH!! I have now unistalled and reinstalled everything except the 17 and 18 patches and all is okay again.
Does anyone know what I might have done wrong? All I did with 16, 17 and 18 was drop them into the CM 11 patches folder, I never actually did anything from there. I tried but nothing showed and I figured it must be automatic.

Peter,
I haven't done this yet -- having only finished downloading the WFP parts last night -- but I wonder if you put each of the years in its own sub-folder or put everything into the "Patches" folder?
Maybe that's part of the problem ???
Regards,

Peter,
First make sure to back up your RB files via CM under 'patches and files'!
You have to install all parts of WFP otherwise you will crash to desktop often because of missing bitmaps. These are : the base patch, 1916 parts 1-3, 1917 parts 1-2 and the 1918 part.
Try this: After downloading the zip's, unzip them to the patches directory of CM. For example mine looks like C:SIERRARedbaron3Dcmbeta10patches
After unzipping there will appear a new folder "wfp". Now enter CM and press 'patches and files'. In the window "patches available" you will find 'wfp'. Choose it and press 'add'. Now 'wfp' will load...
Then go to 'preferences' and click on 'copy files based on date'.
Then create a campaign you want to play within RB. After doing this, you have to update it via CM to load the currently needed bmp's...
To do this enter CM and press 'campaign', then mark your campaign in the window and click on open. Now RB will load all currently needed bmp's, dml, dam and dts files. Repeat this from time to time, because wfp introduces new aircraft from time to time and therefore new bmp's and so on must be loaded...
Hope this helps,
Best, Immo

Thanks guys. Immo, crashing to desktop was exactly the problem so I reckon you,ve pretty much nailed it. Just one thing for clarification. Is it that I must first unzip all the WF patches to CM11/patches and then install the lot as one? If so that's where I've gone wrong in installing each one idividually and trying to start a 1916 campaign with effectively only the 1918 patch in place.
Hmmm, now it occurs to me that unzipping them all first will have the same effect as each patch replaces the previous one when unzipped. Obviously I haven't understood this correctly. Sorry to be a pain.

Hi Peter,
yes, first unzip them all - and then install the lot as one!
Patching Red Baron could really be a pain
But when you have installed everything in a propper way it is a completely new game!
Have fun
Immo

This allows Winzip to create all the date folder architecture you need. I think it defaults to on, but in one attempt to apply WFP I had this checked off, resulting in several thousand unsorted bitmaps being dumped in my patches folder *:-[

Salute! duckman
yes, I made the same frustrating experience some years ago, I think it was with one of the old Wingstrut patches

Peter,
As Immo says, unzip them all and then install the lot from CM. If you poke around in the /patches/wfp folder you'll see a folder called 'Date', inside which are a load more folders. CM uses these folders to keep the patch at the correct date (for units, aircraft etc), thus making sure you fly the correct machine at the correct time! This is why it's so important with WFP to use the 'Set Game Date' after each mission and 'Copy files based on date' button is checked.

By the way, do you know the secret to running RB3D without the CD so you can save your disk?
If not, I suggest you visit http://www.billybishop.net/RedBaron3D/index.html and look on that page for the instructions.
Until later,
Al

Thanks for that Al, I'll give it a go. Meantime the problem persists and I'm still crashing to desktop every time I try to move out of 1916. Just have to keep at it I suppose.
